At the "Powering Ahead: Innovations in Energy and Plastics Technology" event at Newsweek, the artist, director and cultural innovator Sophie Hunter presented the trailer of her project Salt of the Earth, a theatre installation and artistic reflection on what it means to actively bear witness to our climate emergency. The Salt of the Earth theatre performance premiered in Venice in September 2024, a city which has already lost 85% of its salt marshes. The project was promoted at The Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit shortly after. Sophie also attended the Inaugural NAT Gala in NY on September 21 2025, an event that uses art, fashion, and culture to raise funds for nature conservation and address the climate crisis.

For Newsweek's 2025 event panelists explored how assets like coastal environments, geothermal energy, and circular fuels can be reframed as bankable infrastructure, unlocking capital, reducing risk, and driving long-term returns.

Remember that educating yourself further is climate action, developing your niche or leaning into generalization is climate action, learning more is always worth it!

It’s Climate Week in NYC!

Using our Environmental Health and Data Portal, we track important data to protect New Yorkers from climate effects.

You can use the portal to see how your neighborhood’s climate indicators compare with other NYC neighborhoods.

Some climate effects we track include:

Air Quality

The New York City Community Air Survey (NYCCAS) evaluates how air quality differs across New York City. This program studies how pollutants from traffic, buildings (boilers and furnaces), and other sources impact air quality in different neighborhoods.

NYCCAS monitors pollutants that cause health problems such as fine particles, nitrogen oxides, elemental carbon, sulfur dioxide and ozone. Air pollution measurements are taken at about 100 locations throughout NYC each season.

The goal of the OneNYC plan is for the city to have the best air quality among all large U.S. cities by 2030. Efforts will be taken to reduce greenhouse emissions to improve air quality and provide public health benefits.

Heat Vulnerability Index

Some NYC neighborhoods have higher risk for heat illness than others. Both environmental and social factors can affect a neighborhood’s heat risk.

Climate change means that heat waves will increase in number, strength and severity in NYC. Led by the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, multiple NYC agencies teamed up to create the Cool Neighborhoods initiative to adapt to a changing climate.

From Symbiocene NYC 💚 I'm so grateful to be finding community around our work in the climate movement. I co-hosted his event once in London and now again in NYC with very little planning (and funding) but the results are in: climate doesn't have to be charts and graphs, it should also be love and stories from our hearts. A string quartet performed, we had artists and activists speak to us all, but mostly we danced, drank, and ate food.

I think we often forget that activism work is human work. Suffering isn't a requirement for our work and I hope these events I'm hosting with Nowadays on Earth and other partners can help remind people of the joy that can sustain us 🌎
