Week 6 Day 3
Exericises: Towers of Hanoi, Tic Tac Toe with jQuery
Today, we learned about jQuery, the flamboyant sibling of Javascript. Whereas yesterday we worked on server-side JS (node), today we did client-side JS/JQuery. We built two browser-based games: towers of Hanoi and Tic Tac Toe. One thing my partner and I struggled with was MVCizing our architecture. But we eventually implemented a controller-like "class" to serve as a middle-man between the browser and the model (which was our node.js code from yesterday). And I put class in quotes because JS doesn't have classes but it's simulated through constructors which are really functions. Actually, what's weird is you can have instances of functions in JS. For example, we simulate the cat class in JS by going: function Cat(name, age){ this.name = name this.age = age }
c = new Cat("name", 13)
I've never seen instances of functions. It's like functions are trying to be classes in JS. Their pretty close (esp. with the help of prototyping methods) except they can't simulate class inheritance. Or maybe they can and we just haven't learned it yet.
Anyways, It's pretty exciting now. We have the basic tools to build visually stunning, interactive games outside the command line. The possibilities are endless...
