I was wondering: didn't Kanzis himself cut off his evolutionary path through enlightenment, as he did in the original series? It is known that targets of Marionette Heart will eventually turn into majins, and we know that Kanzis was "ready to swear his heart" to Clayman. It is unknown if Clayman indeed performed the aforementioned ritual or if it was simple contract magic with the heart on the line, as it wasn't explicit, but is there a possibility of such a different vector of Kanzis' growth?

Of course, your point about it being ambiguous if it actually happened is also exactly right. I went to reread it and I feel I get a few mixed signals from the text.
At this point, Clayman is pretty worried about the Eastern Empire and his memories, so I kind of would expect that he actually did it. But the things that make me think he didn't...
I think some people in the Eastern Empire might be able to tell if Kanzis was a majin, because their constitution is quite different from humans.
We didn't see the heart at any point, which I feel like would have been a solid indicator and would have been included to drive the point home.
my own meta post about how mind control is the ultimate evil in Tensura. That said, at that time I totally believed Clayman had taken Kanzis' heart. On retrospection now I am less sure, because I think he's moving away from that as part of his redemption. But it's possible he's just holding Kanzis' heart as insurance.
But I still feel uneasy about saying it one way or another. π€it's really ambiguous, and I have to wonder if that's intentional. But it also just doesn't really make sense for it to be like, I'll take your heart at the point where you've betrayed me, because it would already be a massive issue by then so. I'm waffling.
