This song, written in the early ‘60s when space travel was still new and novel, and named after the early Telstar communications satellites, is meant to encapsulate the excitement and wonder of humanity finally taking off. I wasn’t alive when that happened, but through this song I can still feel the same excitement and thrill. The main melody, played on a either a Clavioline or a Univox (the precursor to the Vox Continental!), is bursting with a sense of flying and of wonderment and thrill. The tiny keyboard of the Univox/Clavioline lets them make delightful jumps, dips, and all sorts of grace notes that make the song feel so bright. To listen to it without the social context in which it was released, someone might still think it’s about the birth of space travel just by the rocketing feel of the song.
