7/222/14 - Flocking Discussion
I did the flocking activity with the summer school class that I am teaching. Eight students and one other teacher took part in the activity. All students were incoming 9th graders and the space was confined to a small courtyard in the middle of the high school. Initially, students were amazed and inspired by the starling video. Immediately I was asked how they do that. I explained that we were going to simulate the birds to figure it out.
The first two recommended activities worked as planned, and got students warmed up. When I asked students to act as the “protector”, a cluster of laughing students formed and bumped into each other. One issue that was difficult to overcome throughout the activity was maturity. When I saw the Flock Logic videos, it was clear that my students were just goofing around – although I didn’t doubt this in the first place.
The picture shows the seven rules that were brainstormed after these initial trials in order to flock more like the starlings. I summarized them in shorthand, but the two that we settled on were #6 and #7: stay at least an arms length away from all individuals, and if you get touched by another “bird” then you have to squawk. These rules seemed to work; in fact there wasn’t much squawking at all because they were staying an arms length away from each other. They were all staying pretty close together, so I challenged them. I explained that they made no rule about staying together, so what was stopping them from flying all over the courtyard? One student suggested that they attempt to stay about an arms length away from everyone – no closer or further. This modified rule worked for a few seconds before students lost interest and began breaking the rules. Uncontrollable squawking and wing flapping occurred :)
I brought the students back together and explained that I would now be a predator – if they got tagged by me, then they were lunch. All other rules still applied. As soon as I entered the playing field, all of the rules were broken. Students spread out all over the courtyard waiting for me to come by. They hid behind bushes and trees in a stationary position. At this point it was a game of tag.
The three rules that the students came up with were adequate while they were interested in the activity. Rule #6 that the students voted on was very similar to the repulsion rule from Flock Logic: avoid letting any dancer closer than arm’s length (Leonard et al., 2012). In terms of flocking science, this rule can be associated with the idea of spacing. Students were probably inspired by the video at the beginning of the activity, in which they saw no birds bumping into each other. Rule #7 that was agreed on was also a play on this, as well as a desire for students to make bird noises. The modified rule that was created, asking students to stay about an arms length away from all other students was similar to the cohesion rule in Flock Logic, although the study required dancers to keep a minimum amount of individuals at arm’s distance, but my students did not specify this (Leonard et al. 2012). When I introduced myself into the simulation as the predator, it was clear that no rule regarding alignment was set in place. The students simply scattered to avoid me. They did make a short-lived rule to protect two designated “baby birds”, but several students avoided both the baby birds and predator. In retrospect I wish I had encouraged the students here and asked them to make a rule that helped them to escape the predator as a group. How would they navigate their environment?
One other point that I wanted to mention here is to the idea of human flocking. In Keim’s “You May Have Been Born to Flock” he mentions how flocking might be an almost vestigial behavior from our evolutionary past. My father once gave me the advice “avoid the herd mentality”. So this was obviously something that he observed anecdotally as well. Since I took that to heart I have skipped long lines going to the bathroom, in parking lots, at the supermarket. It really works…to many there is comfort in the herd.
