Trust me, fake geek girls are not a myth. I don't mean to judge in the slightest, but I count my housemate as one. She owns several pieces of The Avengers clothing, watches The Big Bang Theory, calls herself 'such a geek', only watches Marvel because she thinks Chris Hemsworth is hot.
Alright, fair. They exist, but they exist in SUCH small quantities compared to the community of "actual" geek girls, that it's entirely unfair to assume someone is "fake" because of like 1% of the girls claiming to be "such geek" aren't actually that geeky. It's like assuming everyone is asexual because 1% of the population is (which they are).
And it's just SO annoying, because no one should have to PROVE themselves, and it's perfectly fine to be like your housemate as well. There's just this ridiculous elitism. And pretty much everyone falls prey to it to some extent.
I mean at the Celebration this weekend I had to try not to be annoyed by how many Elevens there were wandering around. (It was nice to dress up as an obscure Doctor not BECAUSE it was obscure, but because people notice you then and you find the people with common interests.) Â I know the urge to scoff at what's "mainstream". But it's MUCH more fun to celebrate and encourage the interest and have them delve deeper!
