There are many aspects that can be considered offensive, but found City of Dark Magic to a be a satirical poking fun at the cliches of urban paranormal fantasy in which Sarah, a musician and researcher from an ordinary background meets and falls in love with a prince. As the blurb by Conan O’Brien says there is sexual hijinks and time travel involving Beethoven, making the book a light read with dark elements as references are made to the political violence that have occurred in Prague over the centuries. A number of side characters are introduced but not all have a role in Sarah’s efforts to uncover the truth behind her mentor’s death while fending off danger. Found the ending to be rushed though the edition I read had the fair number of 448 pages and there was an obvious set up for the next book in the series, City of Lost Dreams.
