Day 8: I Took a Walk...ooo-ooo-oooooh
Those who travel often know that the best way to really get to know a city is to wander its streets... Wednesday night was definitely a success. I decided to take my party of 1 and explore the area surrounding my temporary office building in the former French Concession district. En route to my planned destination, I stumbled upon a cafe, "Southern Belle" that looked cute enough (and I was hungry enough!), so I grabbed a table on the patio and ordered a glass of wine. I was a little turned off by the menu offerings- all cajun/southern dishes and the picture of the jambalaya looked a little off. So I finished my Sauvignon Blanc and moseyed on to my originally intended venue, Citizen Cafe (http://www.citizenshanghai.com/). If you've been keeping up on with my blog (and why wouldn't you?!) then you will notice that, yes indeed, this restaurant and The Senator lounge (visited on day 3) share the same owner. It is no surprise then that the interior and overall atmosphere was impeccable. I was fortunate to be seated on the hidden upper balcony, overlooking the quite side street (great people watching spot). The coffee was fabulous (single espresso), and so was the lox-cream cheese appetizer and mango cod filet I ordered. If you're in Shanghai, be sure to visit this place...and bring enough cash! I made the mistake of assuming they took credit cards (I don't have the local UnionPay card) and had to hike to a nearby ATM while the restaurant held my briefcase hostage till I paid for dinner (#embarrassing). To end on a happy note, on my walk back to the subway, I found a precious little trinket store where I purchased two rings, one with a tiny bow and the other with...of course...an anchor. :)
