Here’s another Cessna Citation V (this one is a Citation V Ultra) at Dallas Love Field. My previous photo posting was how the Citation I, Citation II, and Citation V families are all tied together as the first generation of Cessna straight wing jets but are also all, with the exception of the Citation Encore which has PW500 engines, use the Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D engine. Riding high in the mid-1960s with the early successes of the PT6 turboprop engine, PWC noted there was a gap between the turboprops and the smallest business jet of the day which was the Learjet. Preliminary work began on a light turbofan that would power aircraft that could fill this gap. The year after work started, Cessna CEO Dwayne Wallace (nephew of founder Clyde Cessna) called PWC’s president to let them know Cessna was working on a new class of business jet that would compete more with the Beech King Air than with the faster Learjets. Wallace made it known he wanted a PWC engine to power what would become the Cessna Citation and the next day, PWC launched the JT15D based solely on Dwayne Wallace’s intentions! Because the Citation I would be a light but simple jet, the JT15D had to be light and robust. It had two unique features- the high pressure compressor uses a centrifugal compressor which is very rare in modern jet engines but more common in early jet engines of the 1940s and 1950s. A centrifugal compressor is compact and with 70% of the fan air in the JT15D bypassing the core, it offered a lightweight design that was short compared to a the more common axial compressor. As this was PWC’s first turbofan, they needed help with the fan and they turned to Pratt & Whitney’s American division for assistance. As a result of the collaboration, the JT15D’s fan is a scaled down version of the fan of the JT9D used on the first Boeing 747s. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #KDAL #DAL #DallasLoveField #airport #planespotting #instaplane #instagramaviation #Avgeekery #Cessna #Citation #CitationV #N367JC #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge (at Dallas Love Field)
