“I was with Edwin Laughlin for his first experiments, before he became Phoenix. I collected his victims, and I his their remains in the walls of Ashtown. We killed so many Smiths. Too many to remember. More than have ever been found.” He flared his nostrils, his lip quivering as he spoke. “You all smell the same.”
“What is your name?” Cyrus asked.

According to The Dragon’s Tooth, Lawrence’s sisters and Cyrus’s aunts, Harriet and Circe Smith, were killed by Phoenix; their bodies were not found until years later. So this bears up with canon.
What about the others? Willem Baldwin says that many, many Smiths have been killed by Phoenix. More than Harriet and Circe.
Was the plane crash Daniel Smith the elder died in perhaps not an accident? Was his body ever found?
It is stated that Lawrence’s parents “died of slow grief, mourning his siblings.” This is understandable - three of their children died during their lifetime, and a fourth, while safe, was forever beyond their reach; they never saw Hyacinth again.
But could their deaths have been...helped along, perhaps?
What about any other Smiths? How did the parents of Albert Smith, Cyrus’s grandfather, die? Did he have any siblings?
The Smiths seem to have been very notorious within the Order of Brendan for a family who was only properly reinstated within the last generation, for their members to have been targeted by Phoenix so much.
Either that, or Willem Baldwin was just trying to brag and intimidate Cyrus.
Wouldn’t it be total karma if, in The Silent Bells, Cyrus and Antigone and Co. crossed into the world that Hyacinth Smith (and Henry York Maccabee) resides in, and Hyacinth was the one who killed Phoenix, thus avenging her sisters Harriet and Circe?
Hyacinth Maxine Smith Westmore is the sole survivor of her immediate family.
Her sisters, dead after Phoenix experimented on them. Her older brother, dying on a mission for the Order. Her younger brother, lost at sea. Her parents, dead of grief.
And it’s not like her later family fared much better. Her husband and youngest son were missing, feared dead, for twelve years. Three of her other sons died.
She has been through so much.
Does she actually know what happened to her parents and siblings? Will she ever find out?
