We feed them ultra-processed junk, and, in some cases, pizza is classified as a vegetable. How can their brains and bodies function when they’re fueled by empty calories and chemicals instead of whole, nutrient-rich foods?
They sit for 7 hours straight, with limited time for play or movement. Physical activity, which is critical for mental and physical health, is reduced to an afterthought or a punishment.

Gut Health and Sleep: What Science Really Shows
Sleep and gut health are often presented as two separate aspects of wellbeing. One concerns rest, energy and brain function, while the other is associated with digestion, immunity and nutrition. Research, however, suggests that the two systems interact through circadian rhythms, metabolic processes, immune signalling and the microbiome–gut–brain axis. This does not mean that poor sleep is caused by an “unhealthy gut” or that taking a probiotic can cure insomnia. Most of the available research identifies associations rather than clear cause-and-effect relationships, while many of the proposed biological mechanisms have been studied more extensively in animals than in humans. Understanding what the evidence actually shows can help distinguish promising scientific findings from exaggerated wellness claims. What do we mean by gut health? Gut health does not have a single, universally accepted medical definition. It generally refers to the ability of the gastrointestinal system to digest and absorb nutrients, maintain an effective intestinal barrier, support immune regulation and function without persistent pain, bloating or other disruptive symptoms. The gut microbiome is the community of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms that live primarily in the large intestine. These microorganisms participate in the metabolism of dietary components, the production of certain vitamins and metabolites, the regulation of immune activity and the maintenance of the intestinal environment. There is no single “perfect” microbiome shared by every healthy person. Microbial composition varies according to age, diet, medication use, geographical location, genetics, physical activity and many other factors. Greater microbial diversity is sometimes associated with better health outcomes, but diversity alone is not sufficient to determine whether a microbiome is healthy. How can sleep affect the gut? Sleep is regulated partly by the circadian system, the network of biological clocks that coordinates physiological processes over approximately 24 hours. The central biological clock in the brain responds strongly to light, while peripheral clocks in organs such as the liver and intestine are also influenced by food intake, physical activity and hormonal signals. The gut microbiome also displays daily fluctuations. The abundance and activity of certain microorganisms can change according to the time of day, meal timing and the sleep–wake cycle. Irregular sleep, night-shift work and eating during the biological night may disrupt the alignment between these systems. Sleep loss can also affect the gut indirectly. It may alter appetite, food preferences, stress hormone activity, immune regulation and glucose metabolism. A tired person may consume more highly processed foods, exercise less or eat at irregular times, all of which can influence the microbiome independently of sleep itself. Does sleep deprivation change the microbiome? Experimental and observational studies suggest that sleep disruption may be associated with changes in microbial composition, intestinal permeability and inflammatory activity. The evidence in humans, however, remains limited and inconsistent. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 20 human and animal studies. Overall, sleep deprivation was associated with changes in microbial diversity and in the abundance of certain bacterial populations. However, only four of the included studies involved humans exclusively, and the trends identified in those studies were not statistically significant, largely because of their small sample sizes. The strongest findings came from rodent studies and cannot automatically be applied to humans. The studies also differed considerably in design. Some investigated total sleep deprivation, others partial sleep restriction, insomnia or night-shift work. Diet, stress, medication, age and physical activity can independently affect the microbiome. It is therefore not yet possible to attribute one specific microbial change solely to poor sleep. Can the gut influence sleep? The potential influence of the gut on sleep is studied through the microbiome–gut–brain axis. This communication network involves the vagus nerve, the immune system, stress hormones and metabolites produced by intestinal microorganisms. Short-chain fatty acids are among the possible mechanisms involved. They can influence intestinal barrier function, immune activity and metabolic signals that communicate indirectly with the brain. Other microbial products may participate in the metabolism of tryptophan, an amino acid used in the production of substances associated with sleep and mood. An important clarification is necessary here. It is often claimed that most of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut and therefore “travels to the brain” to regulate mood and sleep. This is not accurate. Peripheral serotonin does not readily cross the blood–brain barrier, meaning that serotonin in the gut and serotonin in the brain form functionally separate pools. The gut may influence the brain through the availability of precursor substances, neural signals and immune-metabolic mechanisms, but not through the simple transfer of intestinal serotonin into the brain. What do human studies show? A 2019 study measured sleep using actigraphy and analysed participants’ gut microbiomes. Greater microbial diversity was associated with longer sleep duration and better sleep efficiency. However, the study involved a small sample and had an observational design. It could not determine whether the microbiome improved sleep, whether better sleep supported microbial diversity or whether a third factor, such as diet or physical activity, influenced both. More recent reviews have identified differences in microbiome composition between people with and without insomnia. However, researchers have not found a stable and reproducible microbial “signature” of insomnia. Results vary according to geographical region, diet, age, medication use, analytical methods and the presence of other health conditions. The current evidence therefore supports the existence of a relationship, but not a simple therapeutic sequence in which changing the microbiome automatically corrects sleep problems. Sleep, the gut and metabolic health Insufficient sleep can affect insulin sensitivity, appetite regulation, food choices and daily energy metabolism. At the same time, the microbiome participates in the processing of dietary components and the production of substances that interact with metabolic and hormonal signals. In a controlled clinical study presented by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a diet rich in fibre and minimally processed foods changed the composition and function of the microbiome while also influencing energy balance and hormones related to satiety. The study was small and short in duration, but it demonstrated that interactions between diet, the microbiome and metabolism can be measured under controlled human conditions. Not every metabolic effect of poor sleep should be attributed to the microbiome. Sleep can directly influence the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, independently of possible changes in the gut. Immunity, inflammation and mood Sleep and the microbiome also interact with the immune system. Persistent sleep disruption has been associated with increased inflammatory markers, while the microbiome contributes to the development and regulation of immune responses. These pathways may represent one of the links between poor sleep, gastrointestinal discomfort and reduced overall wellbeing. Mood can also be influenced by both systems. Stress may disrupt sleep and intestinal motility, while persistent gastrointestinal symptoms can increase psychological distress and make sleep more difficult. This is a circular interaction and does not prove that a mental health condition is caused by one particular bacterium. Can probiotics improve sleep? Some meta-analyses of randomised trials have reported small improvements in subjective sleep-quality scores following the use of specific probiotics or paraprobiotics. A 2024 meta-analysis found a possible benefit in some self-reported measures, but no consistent improvement across other subjective or objective sleep parameters. A later 2026 meta-analysis also reported small to moderate improvements in subjective sleep quality and insomnia scores, without a significant effect on daytime sleepiness or cortisol levels. The included studies used different strains, doses, treatment durations and participant populations. Their findings therefore do not mean that all probiotic products produce the same effect. Probiotics are not an established treatment for insomnia and should not replace medical assessment. For chronic insomnia, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, known as CBT-I, remains the recommended first-line treatment according to the American College of Physicians clinical guideline. Habits that support both gut health and sleep Maintain consistent sleep and wake times Consistency helps synchronise the circadian system. Sleep and wake times do not need to be identical every day, but large and repeated variations can make it more difficult for the body to maintain a stable sleep–wake rhythm. Get natural light early in the day Morning and daytime light provide a powerful signal to the biological clock, supporting alertness during the day and sleepiness in the evening. Regular physical activity may also benefit sleep, metabolic health and bowel function. Keep meal times relatively consistent Irregular food intake, particularly during the night, may disrupt peripheral biological clocks. A rigid schedule is not necessary for everyone, but general consistency helps the body anticipate when food will be consumed and processed. Avoid very large meals shortly before bedtime A heavy meal can cause reflux, bloating or discomfort that interrupts sleep. This does not mean that every food consumed after a particular hour is harmful. Meal size, composition, individual tolerance and the time between eating and going to bed are more relevant. Choose a variety of plant foods Vegetables, fruits, pulses, whole grains, nuts and seeds provide different types of fibre and other compounds used by the microbiome. Dietary variety is generally a more reasonable goal than focusing on one particular “superfood”. Fibre intake should be increased gradually and accompanied by adequate fluid consumption. A sudden increase can worsen gas and bloating, particularly in people with irritable bowel syndrome or other gastrointestinal conditions. Do not assume fermented foods are necessary for everyone Yoghurt containing live cultures, kefir and other fermented foods can form part of a balanced diet when they are well tolerated. Not all products contain the same microorganisms or provide the same proven effects. They are not treatments for insomnia or gastrointestinal disease. Limit caffeine and alcohol in the evening Caffeine can delay sleep onset, particularly in sensitive individuals. Alcohol may initially produce drowsiness, but it often fragments sleep later in the night and may worsen snoring, sleep apnoea and gastro-oesophageal reflux. Create a suitable sleep environment A dark, quiet and relatively cool bedroom, together with reduced exposure to bright light and stimulating digital content before bedtime, may make sleep easier. These practices form part of sleep hygiene, but they are not a treatment for every sleep disorder. When are lifestyle changes not enough? Persistent sleep difficulties should not automatically be attributed to the microbiome, diet or stress. Medical assessment is advisable when sleep problems occur frequently, interfere with everyday functioning or are accompanied by: - loud and persistent snoring, - pauses in breathing or choking during sleep, - excessive daytime sleepiness, - morning headaches, - an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, - unexplained nighttime awakenings, - persistent insomnia despite appropriate sleeping conditions. Similarly, persistent abdominal pain, blood or black colour in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, nighttime diarrhoea or a significant change in bowel habits require medical investigation. These symptoms should not be managed solely with probiotics or dietary experimentation. An important connection that is not yet fully understood Gut health and sleep are dynamic systems that interact with metabolism, immunity, the nervous system and mood. Current research supports a bidirectional relationship, but it has not yet demonstrated that one specific change in the microbiome can cause or cure a sleep disorder. For everyday health, the most evidence-based approach is less dramatic but more meaningful: adequate and consistent sleep, dietary variety, a gradual increase in fibre intake, regular physical activity, exposure to light at the appropriate time and timely assessment of persistent symptoms. Supporting these fundamental biological rhythms does not magically “reset” the body. It creates the conditions in which its different systems can function in a more coordinated way. Sleep Regularity: Surprising Reasons a Consistent Sleep Schedule Matters More Than You Think
Sleep regularity may be one of the most overlooked parts of getting a good night's rest. Most of us have heard that adults should get seven or more hours of sleep each night, but the number of hours you sleep is only part of the equation. Research increasingly suggests that when you sleep—and how consistently you maintain your bedtime and wake time—also matters for your health. Think about your typical week. You might go to bed around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, midnight on Wednesday, stay up until 2:00 a.m. Friday, and then sleep until late Saturday morning to catch up. You may still average a reasonable number of hours across the week, but your body's internal clock is constantly being asked to adjust. That's where sleep regularity becomes important. A consistent sleep schedule helps your body anticipate when it should be awake and when it should prepare for sleep. And although no sleep schedule can guarantee perfect health, research suggests that maintaining relatively consistent sleep and wake times may support cardiovascular health, metabolic health, mental well-being, cognitive performance, and daytime functioning. What Is Sleep Regularity? Sleep regularity refers to how consistent your sleep patterns are from one day to another. It includes factors such as when you go to bed, when you wake up, and how much those times change across the week. It is different from sleep duration. For example, two people could each sleep eight hours per night. One sleeps from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. almost every day. The other sleeps from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. some nights, 1:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on others, and occasionally stays awake until 3:00 a.m. Both may average eight hours, but their sleep patterns are very different. The American Heart Association describes regularity as the stability of sleep timing or duration across days, while sleep timing refers to where sleep occurs within the 24-hour day. Why Sleep Regularity Matters to Your Body Clock Your body operates on an approximately 24-hour internal cycle known as the circadian rhythm. This system helps regulate far more than sleep. Circadian processes are involved in alertness, hormone release, appetite, metabolism, body temperature, and other biological functions. Light and darkness are powerful signals to this internal clock, but your daily habits also matter. When your bedtime changes dramatically from one day to another, your sleep-wake schedule may become less aligned with your circadian system. This is one reason maintaining sleep regularity can be useful. A predictable schedule provides your body with repeated cues about when it is time to become active and when it is time to prepare for rest. 1. A Consistent Schedule May Improve Sleep Quality Have you ever noticed that you sometimes wake up naturally a few minutes before your alarm? Your body learns routines. Going to bed and waking at similar times can help reinforce a predictable sleep-wake pattern. Over time, this may make it easier to feel sleepy around bedtime and more alert after waking. Healthy sleep is not defined by duration alone. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine identifies duration, quality, appropriate timing, regularity, and the absence of sleep disorders as important components of healthy sleep. That means someone who sleeps eight hours at dramatically different times each night may have a different sleep-health profile from someone whose schedule is more stable. 2. Sleep Regularity May Matter for Heart Health One of the more interesting areas of research involves cardiovascular health. An NIH-supported study followed adults ages 45 to 84 and examined variations in both sleep duration and timing. Participants with the most irregular sleep patterns were nearly twice as likely to experience cardiovascular disease during follow-up compared with those who had more regular schedules, even after researchers adjusted for several other factors. That doesn't prove irregular sleep directly causes heart disease. Observational studies can identify associations without establishing cause and effect. However, the finding adds to evidence suggesting that sleep regularity deserves attention alongside exercise, nutrition, and other lifestyle habits. 3. Irregular Sleep May Affect Metabolic Health Sleep and metabolism are closely connected. Research has examined associations between irregular sleep and factors including body weight, insulin resistance, blood pressure, and other cardiometabolic measures. A systematic review of sleep variability and cardiometabolic health found associations across several outcomes, although results differed depending on how irregularity was measured and which outcome researchers studied. A newer 2025 systematic review similarly reported consistent associations between greater sleep-timing irregularity and higher body mass index, insulin resistance, hypertension, and cardiovascular outcomes. The authors also emphasized that more randomized intervention research is needed. This doesn't mean sleeping late one Saturday will damage your metabolism. It means your overall pattern may matter. 4. Your Brain Likes Consistency Too Your brain depends on quality sleep for memory, learning, attention, and decision-making. A 2026 meta-analysis involving 20 studies and more than 15,000 participants found that greater sleep variability was associated with poorer cognitive performance. The association was relatively modest, but it adds another reason to think beyond total hours of sleep. If you frequently struggle with concentration during the day, improving sleep regularity may be one lifestyle factor worth examining alongside stress, hydration, nutrition, medication, and other possible contributors. 5. A Regular Schedule Can Improve Daytime Energy Many people try to solve low energy with caffeine. Coffee can temporarily increase alertness, but it cannot replace healthy sleep. An inconsistent schedule can leave you feeling as though your body doesn't know when the day begins or ends. You may wake up groggy on Monday after sleeping several hours later than usual over the weekend. Maintaining a more predictable schedule can make mornings easier because your body is not constantly adjusting to major changes in sleep timing. This is especially useful for people who have to wake at approximately the same time every workday. What Is Social Jet Lag? You don't need to travel internationally to experience something similar to jet lag. Researchers use the term social jet lag to describe a mismatch between sleep timing on workdays and free days. Imagine someone who sleeps: Monday through Friday: 10:30 p.m.–6:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday: 2:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. The person may still get eight hours, but their sleep period has shifted by several hours. Then Sunday night arrives, and they attempt to suddenly return to their weekday schedule. This repeated shift can work against sleep regularity and may explain why Monday morning feels especially difficult for some people. That doesn't mean you can never stay up late or sleep in. Real life includes celebrations, travel, family commitments, and weekends. The goal is reasonable consistency, not perfection. How Much Sleep Do Adults Need? Regularity should never become an excuse for consistently sleeping too little. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society recommend that adults generally get at least seven hours of sleep per night on a regular basis to support optimal health. So sleeping from 1:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. every night would certainly be regular—but it would still provide inadequate sleep for most adults. A healthy approach combines adequate duration with good quality, appropriate timing, and reasonable consistency. How to Improve Sleep Regularity You don't need to completely redesign your life. Start with the part of your schedule you can control most easily. Choose a realistic wake-up time Your wake time is often easier to control than your bedtime because work and family responsibilities already require you to get up at a certain hour. Choose a time you can reasonably maintain on most days. Gradually adjust your bedtime If you're currently going to bed at 1:00 a.m., trying to suddenly fall asleep at 9:30 p.m. probably won't work. Move bedtime earlier in smaller increments while keeping your morning schedule relatively consistent. Create a wind-down routine Give your brain cues that the day is ending. Your routine could include: - Dimming the lights - Taking a warm shower - Reading - Stretching - Prayer or meditation - Preparing clothes for the next morning Try to avoid turning bedtime into another work session. Get morning light Morning light helps provide an important signal to your circadian system. Opening the curtains, walking outside, or spending some time outdoors after waking can help reinforce the distinction between daytime activity and nighttime rest. Reduce late-night stimulation Phones, televisions, work emails, and social media can easily turn "five more minutes" into another hour awake. Set a reasonable cutoff for activities that keep you mentally engaged. Be careful with late caffeine Caffeine can remain in the body for hours. If you're having difficulty falling asleep at your planned bedtime, examine how much caffeine you're consuming and when you're drinking it. Keep weekends reasonably close You don't necessarily have to wake at 6:00 a.m. every Saturday just because that's your weekday schedule. However, repeatedly shifting your sleep several hours later every weekend may make Monday more difficult. The objective is consistency you can actually maintain. What If You Work Night Shifts? Shift workers face a very different challenge because their work schedules may conflict with typical daylight patterns. If you work nights or rotating shifts, perfect consistency may simply not be possible. In that situation, focus on creating as much predictability as your schedule allows. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes that establishing regular daily routines, including consistent activities and meal schedules, may be part of managing circadian rhythm disruption. People experiencing persistent sleep difficulties, excessive daytime sleepiness, or problems related to shift work should discuss them with a healthcare professional. Don't Turn Healthy Sleep Into Another Source of Stress There is an important balance here. You don't need to become anxious because you went to bed an hour late.
