Cheese in the Trap has got to be one of my all time favorite dramatic off and on the screen dramas. Idc what anyone says: PD Lee is the ultimate bad ass at serving the most dignified passive aggressive shit sandwich to all the fans and people collectively throwing her under the bus. Why you may ask?
So PD Lee gets green lighted by the comic writer Soonkki to make the drama under the strict condition she not follow the comic *too* closely, lest the talented writers ruin the ending of her comic and discredit any originality Soonkki claims to have. So, my guess is the writers and director have this bad ass script and have everything prepared to adapt to the changes of the comic and it’s all fine and dandy but wait, what happens? Douchebags with internet access and a keyboard start to moan about how the series is starting to veer off from the original, which SURPRISE, was SUPPOSED to happen? But then it gets better because Soonkki, rather than maybe not being so intimidated with the improvements the drama made of her comic, decides to make weak stabs at PD Lee and destroy everything because I guess she wanted to be part of the writing crew after all?
It’s hard to read between the lines of the highly diplomatic interview Park Hae Jin but from what I gather I feel like it supports my theory. From the sounds of it (and all the hella shade and sub-mentioning) he wasn’t too happy with not being allowed to follow the comic more closely (which if you know anything at all in the universe, wasn’t in the hands of PD Lee but guess who: Soonkki) and he makes a regretful plight about how the fans kind of ruined it for him and his character, because had it not been for all the shit storm, I’m guessing all the scenes that were edited out to accommodate the ratings, would have in fact made the drama a project living up to his standards.
Honestly bless PD Lee and her sanity to cope with so much got damn nonsense. Shame on all the mindless haters and most of all tvN for not allowing them the budget to record BEFORE releasing the drama in order to avoid all of this bullshit. Who honestly knows every waking detail of what really happened bts but I think given Korean drama history, it’s safe to suspect the worst.
I actually enjoyed the entire series and liked the ending because it retained some originality and openness to interpretation. But I guess people will always project some fantasy of theirs onto television, which is part of what TV is all about but damn, why do some y’alls have to hate and spew so much vitriol at innocent actors and directors?
rant over--except I really wanted to go on about the creepy ass bullying, psychological abuse and misogyny in the drama, but that’s for a later date never.
Cheese In The Trap 9.2/10
