Cinnamon Teal

Hi, Been a while Trying to get technology up to date, in the meantime doing some walks, some side photo stuff, been fun. LOTS of birds!

As I’ve been known to do when I have a head that needs clearing, I headed out in to the Smoke Creek Desert this afternoon.  As is also the case 100% of the time I hoped to see wild horses, burros, or pronghorns.  As is ALSO the case about 80% of the time I saw none of those   But, among the things I did see were these two pairs of cinnamon teal, which I hope I don’t need to tell you, are are absolutely typical high desert wildlife (yes, I’m being facetious). This little patch of Rush Creek just on the Nevada side of the state line seems to be providing a nice little oasis for these waterfowl.   I’ll provide a screenshot of the satellite image courtesy of my camera’s GPS to show that I was INDEED on a drive in the desert at the time.  The little #50 is the approximate location I was when I grabbed this frame.You just never know what nature will show you if you get out there!

Cinnamon teals Doesn't he look fake? Like it's just a wooden or plastic fake duck. . I'm not sure if I'd ever seen one of these before. Outside of taking pictures, I don't have the patience or attention for birdwatching. The goal of taking a nice picture makes it engaging for me, though. So a side benefit is that I go home and learn about whatever bird or plant or other animal I photograph and so my bird knowledge has increased a lot in the past year. . I saw some other interesting ducks on this outing and will post pics of the others soon. . Can't remember if I have mentioned this before, but I read something kind of funny by Peter Kropotkin using ducks as a case for an argument that cooperation is a more significant driving force for evolution than competition. It's sort of old-school communist interpretation of darwinism but interesting, if only philosophically. . I always thought of nature as an endless optimization process but kind of an attempt at a solution with no problem. It's just constantly iterating away and whatever survives keeps iterating. The existence of a stable state, for any period of time, doesn't represent a solution and even if no mutation within the species could improve survival, mutations in other species would. For example, that species' food source or predator might evolve in a way that affects survival of the stable species such that it would evolve or go extinct. . So for example, squirrels can survive a fall from any height and have existed a long time, but evolution has no capacity to apply "survive fall from any height" to other species. . So I think any evolutionary tendency toward cooperation or competition would be unlikely. However, humans are not the only species with language and culture and those processes are not so random. Learned behavior certainly effects the impact of random mutations on survival, though. . Animals with at least some genetic disposition to cooperate can form cultures passed to the next generation even through many mutations. For just $4.25 While at the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge I photographed this gorgeous Cinnamon Teal as he swam in the rain. It was a gray cloudy day, perfect for bringing out how colorful he is. No doubt he's called 'Cinnamon' because of his cinnamon colored feathers, but the back feathers and wing tips are also gorgeous. His eye is a bright red, glowing above his black bill. You can see circular ripples surrounding him where raindrops hit the stream. Raindrops are also evident on the back and sides of this gorgeous bird as he swims.
