But Schönwerthâs stories show us that once upon a time, Cinderfellas evidently suffered right alongside Cinderellas, and handsome young men fell into slumbers nearly as deep as Briar Roseâs hundred-year nap. Just as girls became domestic drudges and suffered under the curse of evil mothers and stepmothers, boys, too, served out terms as gardeners and servants, sometimes banished into the woods by hostile fathers. Well its not exactly that drastic but yes, for those of you who didn't know, there are many handsome young men who fell into slumbers as deep as Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty), served their evil stepmothers and even begged for their lives with the Hunter (Snow White). These "Cinderfellas" were written by the antiquarian Franz Xaver von Schönwerth, who much like the Brothers Grimm, was a collector and writer of fairy tales.Â
A discovery by the Guardian in early March reports that 500 unknown fairy tales (collected by Schönwerth, were found under lock and key in a municipal archive in Regensburg, Germany. Despite this revelation, it must be pointed out that in 2010 over 100 of those fairy takes were taken from the archives and published by Erika Eichenseer, under the title Prinz Rosszwifl so the news isn't exactly recent.Â
The fairy tales have a fierce energy that we do not see in those given to us by the Grimms, seemingly more a combination of Greek mythology and fairy tale: Schönwerth's Cinderella is a woodcutter's daughter who used golden slippers to recover her lover from the moon and sun while his miller's daughter employs an ax while chopping off the tale of a giant black cat in order to disenchant a prince.Â
Documenting the oral traditions of Bavaria, the narrative neglects the psychology of the plot (as oral narratives tend to do) leading us through the castle, woods and countryside in a speedy series of encounters with dragons, witches and other evil creatures leaving no room for "why??" but rather always "what happens next?!"Â
I am hoping that in the future we might be able to get our hands on this collection just to see how our "Cinderfellas" might escape their plight and live happily ever after...any takers on whether or not Disney might get involved? Maybe future generations of Disney children might get the chance to have a male "damsel in distress" bounding across their screens...
