Here's an AU, what if Regent Cid found Zidane when he was first dropped on Gaia, so he and Lady Hilda decided to raise him.
He's sort of kept a secret in Order to protect him from any dangers. As a little one he does meet Princesd Garnet though.
When he gets older he gets really sick of royal life, and figures out he's not related to the royal family (the tail is a dead giveaway, really), so he runs away to find his real home. He's unsuccessful, obviously. But he doesn't wanna rejoin the royal family, so he joins Tantalus instead.
The story would play out as usual, but once they reach Lindblum, Zidane does everything in his power to avoid being in the castle for any long periods of time and really tries to avoid Cid for as long as possible.
When it is revealed that Zidane Is Cid's son, it also gets revealed that Zidane and Dagger are betrothed, which peeves Zidane off because, "If I'm going to marry her, it's because she falls in love with me and I fall in love with her, not because you told us too!"
I just think this could be a fun idea to play with. I also like imagine Steiner's reaction to it.
