I feel like they tried to do too much with the setup. And I just don't buy a lot of it. But there were cool shots and that Curse music with the over-the-balcony-looking-down-at-the-tiled-floor shot had my heart all a-flutter.
After the setup it smooths out a bit. I feel like they should have gone with high schoolers instead of middle schoolers. Everything these kids deal with is so adult. Jake could have been grungier. Suicidal. It’s hard to buy his ‘killer’ journey.
The writing and acting were fine, this is all terribly subjective and should not be taken terribly seriously.
When the mom flew out the window I went, ‘oh, right. These are the people in the slasher movie who all die.’ I think more screen time could have been spent on the old characters. Toward the end I found myself skipping through the new character scenes.
The exception is the blonde lady at the school who had like two lines and made me laugh.
I see there’s an internet theory that the biology teacher is Glenda. That would make that whole thing make more sense, but we shall see. I don’t know if she would be that old? (like I’m going to calculate it; like that would stop them)
The old characters meeting the new characters was really wonderful, especially Tiffany. They brought in that good old weird Chucky feel. This is easily the most I’ve enjoyed Tiffany. She made me laugh all the time. I think her character works better in a tv format.
Andy and Kyle’s intro was awesome.
I saw a tiny spoiler about Fiona playing Young Charles. I wonder how long it would have taken me to notice otherwise.
The flashbacks to tiny Charles were fantastic. As much as I love Fiona, the end of episode three was probably my favorite part of the whole thing.
‘Corrupting an innocent.’ Ah, here’s the rule change. Every new Chucky thing must have some kind of rule change. I think at the end of Cult, Chucky could put himself into anything willy nilly. Now they’re trying to put some limits on it and explain why Chucky wants to get people to kill. I’m not mad about it or anything, but I do find it unnecessary.
That ‘identical vessel’ thing is sufficient, imho. Since this whole thing apparently takes place not long after Cult (although the weather doesn’t line up, but what can ya do), you could buy that he needs time to gather Good Guy dolls, leading up to the basement scene.
As for the ‘wants others to kill’ thing, idk why it needs an explanation. Chucky likes killing. It’s fun to find someone who enjoys your hobbies. He’s trying to spread the joy around!
I should be upset by the way we leave Nica. But I’m thrumming with all the stuff we got to see of her and Tiffany and the flashback scenes (although I would not have minded more Nica/Tiffany and fewer new-character-who-exists-to-die scenes). But Nica is bae and I still hope there’s some way she ends up okay. Everyone’s rooting for Nica. Voodoo’s gotta regrow limbs or something, right?
I saw someone calling for an Emmy for Fiona. I think she should have gotten ten thousand awards for Dirk Gently, so sure. If Chucky is what it takes, make it so.
Less is more with the doll movement if you’re going for tension. Some of those kills were completely unbelievable, but I don’t care, honestly. It’s pretty much always been that way, from the moment Chucky tapped someone on the nose with a toy hammer and they flew out of a window. I did like that little ‘how are you so strong?’ exchange.
Anyway, the old characters were great, Tilly made me laugh constantly, young Charles was fantastic (peter pan guy too, and yes I see your 'kind of a psychopath who never gets old' references) and Fiona’s potential was not entirely wasted. So overall, I’m happy. Even if I would probably skip through a lot of the new character stuff if I ever watched it again.
P.S. I forgot to mention Dr. Foley randomly being the dad of one of the kids. I did a double take. ‘Are they trying to make some convoluted connection here? but he is very dead.’ Mancini’s just reusing him. Which is fine, but his looks are basically exactly the same so it’s weird. Giving Malcolm a beard worked, but apparently shaving one off doesn’t do as much.
