a lateral view during a stick climb is just about the only reliable way to look at Timarcha lusitanica's colorful legs and venter without flipping them around or simply bothering them enough to play dead, although they certainly are the perfect shape and size to do weird sleight of hand tricks with like you would with a marble. after a quick peek, you can put the stick back down and they will become inconspicuous black chrysomelids once more
at least assuming they let go of it

Leaf Beetle (Family Chrysomelidae), larva, taken July 3, 2026, in New Hampshire, US
A ridiculously rotund beetle larva clinging to the underside of a leaf, probably hoping I won't bother it! Luckily for this individual, I took my couple photos and left, leaving it no worse for wear. This short, rounded larval form seems to be quite popular in insects. I've seen it in leaf beetles, ladybugs, and some butterflies so far, though I wouldn't be surprised if more took on this shape. I wonder what advantage being so squished has other than extra cuteness factor, maybe mimicking the shape of a parasitic wasp pupa?
No common name (Paropsis ornata)

A lovely Disonycha caroliniana that I met today. I love their stripes!
They look like hand-painted art.

I can’t believe I actually spotted this delightful little freak. He could have just been a lil bit of something stuck to the leaf but I stared at him for juuust long enough that I could make out the antennae and legs. Very good disguise if I wasn’t actively inspecting every vaguely insect-shaped object on this plant.
