I think people are right when they say the chrono trigger elements hold chrono cross back because the tonal dissonance between the two is distracting if not downright upsetting. I'm not saying trigger is a game without tragedy or dark elements, but it is overall a game about changing the world for the better and finding hope in the darkness. And then Cross says hey remember your good friends from the cool time travel adventure? Guardia has fallen and all your friends are dead or missing or built into a mind-controlling hell machine ☺️ no you'll never get resolution on that. Oh and Magus isn't even really here even though he was the ONE dude we were going to include. Everything is cryptic and confusing and weird now, and a neverending exercise in not being able to save everybody in every timeline and having to carry on anyway.
but cross IS a weird-cool game with cool mechanics and lore and achingly beautiful music. But because it's made to be held up against trigger—the worlds most perfect rpg ever made—forever, it'll always fall uncomfortably short.
That said, I'm a simple bitch and I will start hooting like a howler monkey whenever those references pop up. Like finding the temple of time or the deku tree in a new zelda game. My friends!! My friends!!! I know those guys!!!! Yeaaah!! That's my good friend Robo that I love! He's in the mind-controlling hell machine

Sharing this as well since I'm an amateur game developer trying to make a JRPG system in Godot. One that has elements of Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Final Fantasy X as the main inspiration.
So far, I've implemented the basic stuff for the battle system like the CTB timeline, implementing the element and grid system from Chrono Cross, a simple badge-like system from Mario & Luigi, and the battles should be on the field like in Chrono Trigger. And I'm currently taking a small break from it to implement some overworld mechanics and controls, as well as the menus.
