Kansas City Goes Full Apple
Kansas City Public Schools plans to replace more than 30,000 Windows PCs and Chromebooks with Apple devices as part of a district-wide move toward becoming an “all-Apple district.”
The district has already bought over 4,500 MacBook Neo laptops for students in eighth grade and above, while younger students will continue using existing iPads and MacBook Airs. School officials described the switch as a long-term investment in devices they see as more secure, durable, and reliable.
The announcement also landed in the middle of Apple’s push to expand the reach of its lower-cost MacBook Neo lineup. Apple executives recently said demand for the device ended up much higher than expected, especially in education and enterprise settings.
My Feedback: There’s something a little surreal about schools treating laptop ecosystems almost like team loyalty now. A decade ago this kind of rollout would’ve sounded wildly expensive, but the education tech landscape has shifted a lot since the Chromebook boom started.
Google Is Still Pushing Chromebooks
Google says it’s still fully committed to Chromebooks, even after recent speculation around a possible “Googlebook” laptop project. The company pushed back on the idea that ChromeOS devices are being replaced or sidelined, saying Chromebooks remain an important part of its hardware and software plans.
Part of the confusion came from reports that Google is developing a more premium laptop experience tied closely to Android and AI features. That sparked questions about whether ChromeOS would eventually fade out in favor of something new. Google’s response was basically that multiple device strategies can exist at the same time, and Chromebooks are still growing in schools, business, and casual everyday use.
The company also pointed to ongoing ChromeOS updates, AI integrations, and partnerships with manufacturers as proof that the platform is still active. It sounds less like a replacement situation and more like Google trying to cover every category at once.
My Feedback: Google really does love having overlapping ecosystems running in parallel forever. Still, Chromebooks quietly became normal for a lot of people over the last decade, so it would’ve been weird to see them disappear overnight.
MacBook Neo could disrupt Chromebooks and Windows PCs, analyst says it ‘opens door’ for Apple
Apple’s MacBook Neo in Citrus Apple launched the MacBook Neo earlier this month, shaking up the budget laptop market. The $599 13-inch device — or $499 for students — has raised questions about its potential impact on Google Chromebooks and Windows PCs. It’s especially appealing to students eager to join the Apple ecosystem but previously deterred by higher prices. Ananya Gairola for…
