What advice can you give me about auditioning for a musical in my High School? It's my last year in high school and I want to audition, I want to be a part of a play at least once in my high school life, i knowing that I may not go out into the real world and go straight to Broadway(an actors dream?)but as a matter of fact i may not even make it NY, any advice to get rid of this terrible case of fear. what can I do? -<3 Cindy.
Hi Cindy, thanks for your message :)
I had terrible cases of stage fright when I was in high school as well, but I was able to use the nervous energy on stage & channel it into my performance. But I know it's easy to say & difficult to do.
Advice I can give: prepare, prepare, prepare - mentally, emotionally, physically. Firstly, understand what you need to prepare for the audition What are the requirements - an acapella song, or with accompaniment? And do you have to prepare a monologue as well? The earlier you understand the requirements, the more time you have to prepare the material, and the more likely that you'll be sure of your performance on the day of the audition.
Choosing a song & a monologue differs from person to person - depending on your age range (look up monologues for young actors in the library or online) & the kind of emotional range you are looking for in your piece. It also depends on whether your school is holding an open audition, or if you're auditioning for a specific role -in which case, you may want to find a monologue which suits that character. For songs, find something which suits your range & you're familiar with.
Then practise, practise, practise. The more you're sure of what you're doing, the less likely you'll be struck by fear. If you have a close friend or drama teacher or someone you trust, get them to watch your performance so you have the experience of performing in front of others.
Mentally, just understand that the people in the audition room want you to succeed. They want to watch a good performance - which you can give if you are fully prepared. Go into the audition with a positive attitude - sometimes I stretch & do my warmups to dispel tension. One of my friends goes into the restroom to vent off nervous energy before he performs. Do whatever works for you. It's okay to feel fear. It's normal unless you are the ultra-outspoken, extroverted kind. But don't let come in the way of you showing them the best you can do, because then they'll be happy & so will you.
So PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE. Practise, practise, practise. And by the way, Broadway may be a pipe dream for many actors, but there's plenty of work outside of Broadway & if you keep working at it, you never know where your hard work will bring you one day. :)
Let me know if you've any other concerns. All the best!
