“The closest I ever got to living on my own, away from a materialistic and capitalist society was when I lived in a tepee for three months somewhere in France. So, if there is a film that I identify with it is Into the Wild (2007), by Sean Penn. It is about a young guy named Christopher McCandless who grew up in a very materialistic world that he wanted to escape from. He breaks away from his parents, assumes his own identity, leaves al his personal belongings behind and sets out to journey through the wilderness to Alaska with absolutely nothing. There are just so many moments that make me realize that I would have done the same thing as he did or I might still do. Besides that, the film images are stunning and breathtaking. Even the way they captured the images shows his vulnerability and that of the people that he meets on his path. It touched me because I recognize his feeling of being lost. Like him, I feel alienated and not at place, in this capitalist Western world, but the core of this film is love, which is very important to me. The time that I spent in a tepee may not come close to how he lived in the wilderness, but when I think of his feelings and the sadness that he carries with him. I can see that I also come to the same conclusion; that I also want to go away from here, leave everything behind and go to South America and live in the wilderness.”
