Kicking off the year the right way
The burn on your throat from the third tequila shot you downed made you wince a little and Richardâs laugh made you smile too âReady to hit the dance floor, y/n/n?â
âSure!â You answer and lets him guide you to where the other boys were already dancing. As soon as you get there, Zabdiel pulls your hand so you can dance the bachata that just started playing and you canât contain the happiness inside you, giggling through the spins he guides you through.
At the corner of your eye, you notice Chris roll his eyes and slump on one of the chairs at your table, just by the dance floor. Confusion floods your head when you watch the drama of your bestest best friend (the title he insists on having, since you now consider the other boys your best friends too), who has been acting weird since earlier on the day, when he entered your room abruptly to find Zabdiel already there, helping you pick out your dress for the party you were currently attending.
Even on the way to the party, you didnât miss the slight tension between the two boys who looked like were arguing about something in hushed tones as you climbed into the car.
Youâve been best friends with Christopher Velez since elementary school after he mistakenly blew a spit paper ball on the back of your neck that was supposed to land on the forehead of the mean boy of the class that was always bothering you and other girls. He was ashamed to miss the target and energizingly apologized but you thought it was sweet of him to try to do something, and after having lunch together that day you guys were inseparable. The crush you developed for him over the years was inevitable, Chris was thoughtful and caring, with a talent to make everything fun and always there whenever you needed him.
Years later, when he won La Banda and entered CNCO you were extremely happy for him, even if the fear of losing him and his friendship tugged at you heart, but he never let that happen. Luckily, one year later when you graduated on university, where you majored in marketing and illustration, your best friend was quick to surprise you with a position on the bandâs marketing team, that you gratefully accepted, moving to Miami.
Before taking the spot on the team you had met the boys a couple of times and you hit it off pretty well since the beginning, so when you became a part of their routine and lives full time, your friendship grew stronger and it was like you were gifted with four other best friends.
âAre you okay?â Zabdielâs voice pulled you back to the present and you just nodded, managing a small smile that didnât seem to convince your blonde friend, who raised his eyebrows in question.
Zabdiel was the quiet and observant one of the boys and it didnât take him long to figure out the crush you had on Chris. The other boys noticed pretty easily after some time too, your âbestest best friendâ seeming to be the only one oblivious to your real feelings towards him.
âI donât know, Chris just seems a little off tonightâŠâ you answer the silent inquisition, casting your eyes downs before feeling Zabdiel pull you close for a hug.
âYou know, you should tell him about your feelings, itâs obvious he cares about youâ he cradles your hair as you rest your head on his chest.
âBut not the same way I care about himâ you answer, voice barely above a whisper.
He takes a step back after placing a kiss on the top of your head âWho knows, Chrisâs always been good at surprising usâ
You chuckle, shaking your head and turning to look at Chris again, who disappeared from the table. You look around the dance floor to find only Rich and Erick dancing with some girls and canât help but smile at seeing their carefree selves enjoying a good time.
âHe went to the bar, you should go talk to himâ Zabdiel informs you, giving you a wink and a squeeze on the arm for reassurance. You nod your head, giving him a small smile before turning around to make your way to Chris.
You find him seated at the bar, like Zabdi had said, and bump his shoulder with yours to get his attention âNot having that much fun tonight?â you ask, trying to make some light small talk.
âWhy do you care? You seem to be having all the fun with Zabdiel anywayâ he responds drily, taking a sip of his drink.
So much for light small talk.
The roll of your eyes is inevitable. Chris never seemed to have a problem with the friendship you developed with the boys, although recently heâs been quite annoyed anytime he sees you hanging with Zabdi. Little does he know that your crush on him is one of the main topics you talk about, specially since Chris has been going out a lot with other girls lately. The boys always make sure to check on how youâre feeling, but Zab being the quieter one hangs at home with you more often than Rich and Erick.
So when he seems annoyed that your friend cares enough to keep an eye on you, you canât help the fire that burns inside you, already preparing for an argument, âHe is, in fact, better company than the friend who loves to party with other girls all week but seems to have a stick up his ass when Iâm aroundâ
The rise of his eyebrows show he was not expecting that comeback, specially because youâre mostly non-confrontational and avoids arguments the best you can.
 âWhat are you talking about?â
âPlease Christopher, you go out almost all week long, with a different girl every night to come home all alcohol and smiles like you had the best night, but anytime I go out with you guys lately, you just sit back glaring at anyone I dance withâ you say exasperated, hands resting on your hips to try to make your point.
That glint on his eyes is back and he downs his drink in one gulp before getting up from the stool he was sitting on. He stands so close to you that his perfume floods through your nostrils and you have to policy yourself not to forget what youâre arguing about.
âMaybe I want to be the only one you dance withâ his voice is low but firm and your heart skips a beat, not sure you heard it right. You just stare at him wide-eyed as he takes your hand and pulls you to the side of the bar, where there are less people and you can talk more privately. He doesnât let go of your hand, intertwining your fingers instead, âLook, I know weâve been friends forever and I donât want to lose you, but...â he runs his hand through his hair.
âBut?â you encourage him to continue, your heart beating a thousand beats per minute, not really believing you might be so close to hear what you didnât think was possible.
Chris stands straighter, probably trying to gather enough courage âBut Y/N, I canât keep on going like this. Youâre right, Iâve been going out a lot because I didnât know how to deal with falling in love with my best friend, so I thought I could forget you somehow. I couldnât.â you gasped, putting your other hand on your mouth âIf you donât feel the same, it-â
You cut him off by pressing your mouth to his lightly before parting back a little, it was his turn to stare at you wide-eyed âIâm in love with you tooâ
His face lights up and heâs quick to embrace you with both his arms as you link your hands behind his neck âAre you serious?â he asks with a laugh.
âOf course dumbass, how have you never noticed?â you run a hand on the side of his face, having a hard time believing this is true.
He barks a signature Christopher Velez laughter and squeezes you in his arms âYouâre one to talk, how didnât you notice I was jealous of Zabdiel playing house with you this whole time?â
Itâs your turn to bark out a laughter as you shake your head. Feeling a courage you didnât have before (maybe the three tequila shots were a good idea after all), you suggest âMaybe we could play house together nowâŠâ you look at him through your eyelashes to see a beaming smile on his face.
âIâd love that, mamiâ he pulls you close to the real first kiss of the many more you share that night. âI just hope the playing Iâm intending wasnât practiced with Zabdielâ he sticks his tongue out and you both have to laugh at his antics.
When you get back to the boys on the dancefloor, hand in hand with your boyfriend, looking stupidly happy and Chris slightly cheeky, the chants of finally and wishes of congratulations make you blush and at the same time fill you with a new level of happiness you didnât know.
You spend the rest of the last day of 2021 and welcome 2022 just having the best time with your best friends, dancing without until your feet hurt and you have to take your heels off, only stopping to get drinks or kiss the boy youâve loved since pre-teen days.
When the clock strikes midnight, Chris pulls you close and cradles your face between his hands. You study his face, that you so many times wanted to watch this close âYou know what they say: what you do on the first day of the year is what youâll be doing for the rest of itâ
He chuckles, giving you a wink before responding âIâm counting on itâ
The taste of his lips never seem to get old and you canât help the smile that comes on your face, and when you open your eyes, Chris is mirroring your delight.
This will be a great year.
