MOTHERFUCKER. DONOVAN IS A HALF VAMPIRE AND HSIEN-KO IS A ZOMBIE HOW ARE THEY NOT MONSTERS? I WILL FIGHT YOU OVER THIS MISINFORMATION.
Not every character is based off of basic monster tropes. They’re also based off of myths legends folklore and so forth. Bishamon for example is based off of Tsukumogami. Huitzil takes it’s appearance from Dogū.
I really don’t see a reason for the Jedah complaint. Pyron was defeated and so a new villain comes in. This is like complaining that SF3 has a new villain even though Bison and Shadaloo are destroyed.
I respect your passion, sir, and, as always, am willing to stand corrected. Thank you for this information. I knew of Hsien-ko's supernatural nature (I actually thought she was some form of ghost, not a zombie) but was ignorant of Donovan's origins--especially since he technically qualifies as a Darkstalker! Even with this in mind, though, I feel like your statement emphasizes the point I was trying to get across (perhaps not very well.) Even Donovan (a dhampir) and Hsien-ko (a chinese zombie) are examples of established monster and supernatural type creatures from folklore, myth or modern horror. The third Darkstalkers game removed Donovan, Huitzil and Pyron in favor of Jedah, Q-Bee and B.B. Hood. None of the new characters bring to life any established creature types that I am aware of. I felt that was a missed opportunity, even though the new characters are nice.
For what it's worth, I never thought we needed Bison and Shadaloo for Street Fighter II in the first place. In my view, people can have fighting tournaments and beat the crap out of each other just fine without a criminal empire's overlord villain to face off against. I don't feel like Street Fighter III lost out in that respect, but I always thought one of the greatest charms of Darkstalkers was bringing to digital life the monsters we were (usually) familiar with, and these new characters didn't really signify that to me.

This would be one of those reasons I don't interact much in the fighting game scene.
