"But thinking it over, if I really have to close it down, I feel pang in my heart. Most importantly, everyone here has shown me that I'm valued, and I'm happy to live here. I've met someone I love... and I've been loved by many. So I'll keep the store and stay here forever"
— Whale Store XOXO ep. 10
I remained frustrated with Chom's mother until the end of the series. In a way, I feel it's more realistic that she didn't become this "perfect mother who accepts her daughter" in the space of one episode because it would have felt wrong. I think given what they showed us about her, she still has to work on it. On the other hand, I still don't get why she is finding it so hard to act around her daughter when she brings her girlfriend.
She loves her daughter and I guess she wants her happiness, so witnessing how Tonnam is giving this to her daughter, should be enough.
In contrast, I think Chom became such a compelling character because she grew a lot from the first episode to the last. She was anxious to be out to her mother and was hiding her relationship, but when she found the courage to come out, she never back done from this point. She has been fighting to be accepted, to make her mom recognize the love she shares with Tonnam and she has been trying her best to make things work. I think she is brave and I admire her resilience.
Chom is right: after all, who you love, doesn't change who you are. She hasn't changed. She is the same Chom, but now she just stopped hiding her love. That's the only thing that changed. Her personality, her taste and her behavior haven't changed.
Her mother has to understand that being a woman and loving a woman doesn't require people to treat them differently because of whom they love. Her daughter is still a daughter. She just wants to be treated the same way as she has always been. Thankfully, it seems like Chom's mother might be willing to understand this.
like imagine you’ve been closeted your whole life because you love your mom and the relationship you have with her but you also know the expectations she has for you and you would hate to disappoint her and risk losing that relationship. and yeah, she seems accepting of other people but she’s also always talking about how you’ll end up with a guy and you need to do things so guys will like you so maybe she’s just not accepting if it’s her own kid. so you stay in the closet and keep your relationship a secret for three years, but you know it’s hurting your girlfriend and you’re trying so hard to find the courage to come out so you come up with these elaborate plans to get your mom to figure it out on her own and it includes moving the both of you in with her. and yeah it’s a really bad idea which gets proven when your girlfriend stands up for you to your mom when she’s talking about how you need to change so a guy will like you one day and your girlfriend kind of outs you and she ends up crying and seeing her hurt finally gives you the courage to tell your mom the truth. and then your mom starts ignoring you and treating your girlfriend like crap and you’re trying so hard to keep a positive attitude and stand up for your girlfriend but it’s also proof you were fucking right not to want to tell her and now your girlfriend is moving out and it feels like she’s breaking up with you even if she says she’s not. chompoo baby i am wrapping you in a blanket and kissing you on the forehead and protecting you from everyone
