AquaMapas open collaboration tool for collecting specific information on sanitation and drinking water, with educational purpose, civic regulation and / or as a supplement to development initiatives.

An important initiative to encourage citizen participation in Latin America and the Caribbean on issues of water and sanitation.

BACKGROUND  The world faces enormous challenges of coverage, quality of drinking water and basic sanitation. Latin America has high rates of inequality that is reflected, for example, in the low coverage of water and sanitation in rural and urban areas, insufficient and ineffective regulatory institutions or the low level of investment in infrastructure.

CHALLENGES  • Data not available in friendly formats and / or scattered.  • Timely reporting of costs and perceived quality of drinking water and basic sanitation is not easily accessible.  • Need for more and better maps related to guide supply and basic sanitation in Latin America.

OPPORTUNITY  The 44% of American consumers has smart phones, hoping to become agents for collaboration.

PROPOSAL  We propose a simple, timely, relevant and applicable in all countries of Latin America, promoting citizen participation. AquaMaps present an open collaboration tool for collecting specific information on sanitation and drinking water, with educational purpose, civic regulation and / or as a supplement to development initiatives.

HOW IT WORKS?  Through the application / participation in a planned Challenge exploit the concept of distributed open collaboration, outsourcing tasks to a large group of people or community, through an open call.

EXPECTED RESULTS  Besides injustices generate more visibility, problems, improvements, etc.. creating a tool to control the quality of services in order to improve relations with the various service providers, thus improving the quality of life of people.

On the other hand, through this tool, academics can acquire information relevant to their studies in the area of ​​drinking water and basic sanitation.
