So, it's been quite some time since I last wrote for The Cavement Ltd, as I've been busy with my own music and with the Agatone Music label. I'm introducing a new series on this blog on this sunny Thursday. The Swamp, a series of reviews of free releases that I found when searching for a random word sourced from Wikipedia, a dictionary or Thesaurus on Bandcamp or the netlabel section of Internet Archive. 100% unpredictable music discovery. The Swamp 1 Search term: Brightest Star Release found on Internet Archive Netlabels: GOTO80_-_COPYSLAVE-(20k128)-2004 Published December 3, 2004 Usage Public Domain Topics Chipstyle The first release in my new series The Swamp is a pretty decent lo-bit chiptune release from 2004 on the label 20kbps. Over 5 1-minute long tracks we've got some pretty funky lo-bi musical chipcrunching. First track ALASKA is probably the best out of the bunch, with a fun Ska groove and it's enjoyable even for people who aren't really into Chiptune music. Track 2 SILLYSEX also sounds pretty good with a cool squelchy bass sound, but the lo-bit aspect does make the whole track sound a little muddy and to be honest reduces the squelchyness of the bass to a kind of "fart" sound at some points. Track 5 SPIT didn't really work for me in general though, it's an attempt to play out some kind of Chiptune lo-bit Metal track, but especially when the chips are combined with the lo-bit vocals, it honestly just sounds like a random bootleg of a random metal song, just in very low quality. Overall though, COPYSLAVE is a pretty decent chiptune EP, that isn't perfect, but still provides a few minutes of nice and enjoyable lo-bit music for the fans.
