The Color of a Self Chinchilla Rabbit
The color of a Self Chinchilla rabbit is determined by genetics. The C allele is dominant in the body, but not in the color. A Self Chinchilla may have a ring of yellow, or it may be chocolate or lilac, or a normal eye color. In the ARBA, the colors of the coat and the eyes are different from each other. Generally, the rs allele is dominant, and if there are no visible spots on the coat, the rabbit is a white.
A Self Chinchilla rabbit may be black, blue, chocolate, or lilac. Their color is caused by the B, C, D, and E genes. A chocolate self bunny has a chocolate belly, a triangular neck triangle, and chocolate inside the ears. The eye color is not a reliable indicator of breed type. In fact, a rabbit with a brown eye is probably a self-chinchilla.
There is no way to tell if a rabbit has a self gene unless it has already been mated. It doesn't matter which gene carries the sable gene if its parents are both dilute and normal. Both will have brown eyes unless one of them is mated to the sable allele. If the eye color of the two sexes is the same, the self may have a ruby cast.
