The #Chinese government is set to announce its first population decline in decades. The drop in population has been confirmed by the latest census. The fall comes despite the end of the nation’s strict family planning policies, which were meant to combat the falling birth rate of the world’s most populated county. China’s ‘One Child’ policy was successful in its original aim of slowing population growth, but the long term fallout could lead to economic, political and social issues for generations to come. The #population drop will add pressure on the government to roll out policies to encourage couples to have more children to stop a permanent decline. China’s aging population has been a looming issue for the nation, as demographics shift toward a vastly reduced #workforce. Currently there is one retiree for every five working age adults, however the ratio could change massively in the coming years without a baby boom.
