darling the world is harsh, please let me keep you safe / @chimeriac
This path is stained with blood. Izuku remembers those words very well, he remembers All Might kneeling before his crying mother, he remembers her falling to the floor. He remembers being told about Shigaraki’s past, about Nana’s dead husband and kidnapped child. He remembers Aizawa dragging him away from what was left of All Might. Izuku presses his face into the palms of his calloused hands, into the scars from Shouto and his fight.
Memories overwhelm him, the first time he heard about Endeavour, the sadness in Shouto’s eyes and how he had utterly destroyed himself to get through to Shouto. Their friendship. Their romance. Falling on the ground together, tears in their eyes and kissing for the first time. How they worked together. Their hands clutched tightly under desks. He’s heard stories of amazing loves and the feelings that come with them. He loves Shouto so much, he wants to be with him forever.
Still that love is what puts him this position. He’s seen before, but he’s fought the real raw power for All For One now. A man who does not have to believe in his own myth because he lives up to it. In a twisted way he’s bound to that man in ways he never will anyone else. The successor of One for All, by blood or not he’s a descendant of that man’s brother. Family in the worst sort of way. He cannot allow himself to be the reason that Shouto’s on that man’s radar.
Izuku tries to keep his eyes covered, if he looks it’s over. If he sees Shouto’s tears it’s over. Izuku’s incredible resolve is something that set him apart from everyone in the first place, but he’s weak to it. That look in Shouto’s eyes, it has a tendency to change his goals. If he looks it’s over. He has to do this. He has to protect Shouto. But then Shouto speaks and he snaps up, face out of his hands.
❝ no you didn’t hurt me. you’ve never hurt me. you’re a good boyfriend. it’s me i promise. you didn’t. you didn’t. you’re so good. you didn’t do anything. if i were different this could work, but i’m not. ❞
Of course, of course Shouto would blame himself despite the reassurances. Of course he would blame himself. Izuku can feel the resolve start to crumble beneath his feet.
