➳ Sometimes, Alicia thought she could taste crazy. There were times after her more intense sessions when it sat thick in the air, and she dared not open her mouth lest she allow it passage into her throat. But she can't keep her lips sealed forever, and so she breathes and in it goes, unavoidable, leaving bitterness and fear stuck to the back of her throat. It made her feel infected. And sometimes, that feeling lasted for days.
➳ She was sure it would last longer than that this time around. But she would have to bear with it. This was her idea, after all. She wasn't being forced onto the grounds of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. And yet, somehow she still felt like there was a knife at her back. And perhaps there was. But the knife was of her own making, and it only dug into her spine when she ignored the bite of obligation. She was obligated to go here. Obligated to talk to Chilton after the Abel Gideon fiasco. Chesapeake Ripper, indeed. Poor Abel never stood a chance. It was no wonder he tried to gut Dr. Chilton.
➳ But she wasn't here for Abel's sake. Abel was not her patient, as much as she would have liked him to be, and he was entirely out of her reach. No, she was after a much more prestigious prize--someone who would be considered 'traumatized', and who certainly could be at risk for more. After all, you don't piss off the Chesapeake Ripper and feel safe afterwards. Anything could happen. Anyone could fit his (or her) criteria.
➳ So here she was. Standing at the receptionist's desk and waiting for her to peel her eyes from her magazine. It was all she could do to retain some level of professionalism, barely able to refrain from kicking the desk to alert her to his presence. God, she had to do something about her impatience. She needed to apply the sort of infinite patience and kindness she gave to her patients to others rather than being so.. so.. whatever it was that she was. She didn't like to label herself.
“ I'm here to see Dr. Frederick Chilton. “
➳ The receptionist finally acknowledged her, but didn't do much other than go mechanically through her procedure and wave Alicia through. There was no personality in it, no attempt to even pretend she enjoyed her job. It was almost sad. But concerned psychiatrist or not, she had no time to ponder a receptionist. So she turned and went on her way, heels clicking on tile as she headed for Dr. Chilton's office. It was terribly bad form for her to show up somewhere unannounced, but she felt that it would be easier to just waltz in.
➳ She wasn't quite sure how Frederick felt about women, and didn't want to give him any preconceived notions on what to expect. She'd met her fair share of people who thought her too stupid and who thought her to be an object, and so now she tried to play her cards much more carefully. She just hoped he wouldn't stare at her prosthetic. But then again, staring gave her something to go off of. So she tried to shrug off any of the usual agitation and bitterness that came with having her disability gawked at and rapped her knuckles on the man's office door.
➳ "Dr. Frederick Chilton?" She spoke to the closed door because she was impatient. Standing in this hallway felt like she was a little too close to madness and it was beginning to fog up her eyes. She couldn't stay out here for long. "My name is Dr. Alicia Prouss. May I come in?"

Warmth in Winter
The night air in Wolf Trap was abnormally bitter, clinging to Will Graham's skin like a demon to a sinner. He pulled his scarf tighter around his neck, a huff of breath escaping his lips and furling into a hazed cloud. He was glad he had managed to get the firewood chopped before Frederick came by for a visit.
It wasn't often that Dr. Chilton would make the arduous journey all the way to wolf trap, but seeing as his home was currently undergoing repairs after the incident one year prior (they hadn't allowed him to touch anything until they had thoroughly examined the evidence that was festering on his property, and hadn't allowed him to leave Baltimore for any reason) and he had nowhere else to go but the hotel he'd been cooped up in, the company of his former patient turned significant other was a considerably more viable option for the both of them. After all, misery adored company.
The crackle of gravel alerted the dogs, sending them into a frenzy of excited barking as they clawed at the door to be let out to could greet the farms newest guest. Fortunately, Will mused to himself, These are considerably better circumstances than the last time he pulled into my driveway.
Will walked towards the car, feet crunching in the snow, and he peeked into the driver's seat. "Come in, I have a fire started and the dogs are eager to see you again," Will said, stepping away from the car and allowing Frederick to climb out.

♟ In ancient Greek mythology, the spirit Apate is the personification of deceit, guile, fraud, and deception. She is a lesser known creature--one of the vile things released from Pandora's box, she is the sort that no one brings up in the general history lessons, rather only discovered by those who desire to immerse themselves elbow-deep in dusty tomes and Grecian epics. Or alternatively, by those who simply have nothing better to do than rummage through the depths of the internet.
♟ Foma was of the latter sort. He had no particular interest in mythology, given it was the spawn of human error and had more to do with idiots desperately grasping at straws to explain their fragile understanding of the universe than anything spiritual, but when one is presented with nothing better to do, they can pretend to have an interest in anything. Besides, Wikipedia can make even the driest of drivel seem at least vaguely interesting. Hence why Foma was now neck-deep in Greek mythology, pondering every spirit that had ever escaped Pandora's box.
♟ He supposed that this place was like Pandora's box. The Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane housed all sorts of madmen, and in them resided the same spirits--he could see Apate clearly in the eyes of many who were contained here. Even some of the employees bore her traces. Especially that little mousy-looking fellow with the lisp. Something about that orderly made Foma's hair stand on end. Like he was only seconds away from being on the wrong end of a hawk's talons. Of course, he wasn't scared of Matthew Brown--just curious. He was curious about a lot of things that this facility had to offer.
♟ Hence why he was in Chilton's office. Or, more specifically, why he was in Chilton's office while the man in question wasn't. According to one of the orderlies, Frederick was off talking to Abel Gideon. Funny, that. Foma hadn't tried to find out much about the Gideon fellow in all of his time in the FBI. He'd delve into it sooner or later, though. Nothing ever escaped his curiosity for long.
♟ "She stormed with flying shoe through the heaven bespangled with its pattern of shining stars..." Foma paused. He could hear footsteps--specifically, footsteps and a cane noisier than a bat out of hell. His nose wrinkled. The sound was consistent, repetitive, and it made his blood boil. He deliberately began to look at the books behind Dr. Chilton's desk as a distraction. Half of them looked like the kind he would put on his coffee table rather than read--but then again, he hated most books on psychology. They always made him think he was crazy.
♟ And here, among the books and behind a desk that wasn't his, was where Chilton would find him. Foma heard the door open, and he pulled off his glasses to fix the man with dull eyes. "Dr. Chilton." This was the only greeting he would give. "I have an inquiry." His thoughts again went to Apate. If she were real, had he channeled her to be here? Because he knew he was balanced on a long-winded string of lies, and he had nowhere else to go but further across the chasm. A small wonder she came from Pandora's box. Once you catered to her, it was impossible to return to honesty.
♟ Or maybe it was just impossible to return willingly.
