Today's the day, you guys. My brave girl is finally having her cochlear implant surgery and should be able to hear within a month or so after this. Vada & Brad are sleeping peacefully at the moment but today's going to be really hard for all of us and Vada doesn't have a clue this is all really happening so that's the hardest part. We can only hope we're making the right decision for our daughter but I've worked so hard to get us here and I'm comfortable with it. I trust these doctors & the surgeon wholeheartedly but fear will always remain when it's your own baby. Please keep my family in your thoughts & send us all the good vibes because the beautiful ride is still rough. #vada #cochlearimplants #cochlearimplantsurgery #childrensinplano #deafculture
Today we picked out Vada’s cochlear implant devices and officially scheduled her surgery for April 26th. Bilateral implants, 3 hour procedure, and an overnight stay at the hospital…I thought I was handling it pretty well but on the way home everything hit me. I started imagining them administering anesthesia and us having to walk away and leave our baby with a group of practically strangers; I broke into tears because I feel like we’ve worked so hard to get us here, traveled a significant amount of miles, meanwhile encountering way too many issues/time delays along the way and it’s finally happening. I really do trust our entire CI team and most importantly her, very experienced, surgeon because I truly believe they're one of the best in the state but I’m pretty sure all parents can agree that the idea of surgery on your toddler is scary and nerve wracking. We’re not 100% sure what the outcome of this surgery is and her reaction may be completely alternative to all of those heartwarming ones you see on YouTube or while scrolling through your Facebook timeline but what we do know is that she is the perfect candidate for implants considering they tested her hearing with her aids, today, and she’s getting almost no benefit from them other than that she’s getting used to wearing a device in general. BUT I have a feeling once she hears our voices for the first time she’ll want to wear them all the time. ☺️ We can only hope for a good outcome and I’ll do my best to document and share every bit along the way. P.S. This surgery will not cure Vada’s hearing loss and she will ALWAYS be deaf…cochlear implants are simply a tool and we will certainly continue using sign language as our backbone. #cochlearimplants #childrensinplano #calliercenterforcommunicationdisorders #dallastexas #dallastx #planotx #deafculture #deaftoddler #americansignlanguage
