I was daydreaming in the attic when suddenly, a beam of sunlight stabbed through the dusty gable window, landing directly in front of me. In a frozen instant, the room was illuminated in a sharp, yellow white glow. I became aware of tiny dust motes suspended motionless in the air. The sounds from the house and the street disappeared, replaced by a profound silence, heavy with mysterious portent.
And like a bolt from the blue, I realized I was nothing more than one of those specks of dust, caught in the web of life, existing at the whim of fate. It was cathartic enough to send my mind flying off like a comet, flung far into space, deeply frightened by the immensity of it all. It was as though the universe was banging at my door, trying to remind me of something.
And what did I do? I jumped up in a cold sweat, and ran as fast as I could, all the way down to the darkest corner of the basement to hide.
