Sir Humphrey Chetham founded Chetham’s Hospital School in 1653 when he donated some of his wealth, earned as a merchant, to educate forty poor boys. He also funded Chetham’s Library and provided the money for the purchase of books. By 1665, the school had become a charity, the number of pupils rising to 100, all from poor backgrounds. Chetham’s became a grammar school in 1952 with an emphasis on music education. It has become one of Britain’s premier music schools with around 300 pupils.
The Library started collecting books in 1655 and is the oldest public library in the English speaking World. Admission is free to the library which holds over 100,000 volumes, the majority of which wer printed before 1851
The earliest buildings date from 1424 when a college for priests, clerks and choristers was established for the Collegiate Church, now Manchester Cathedral. The College was dissolved in 1547, during the reformation but was re-founded as Christ’s College in 1578 continuing as such until establishment of the Cathedral in 1847. During the Civil War, the buildings served as a gunpowder factory and prison. Lord Stanley, a Royalist and on whose lands the College stood, was executed here in 1651.
