âTutoring? Seriously??â you snap accidentally at your mom, appalled at the idea of having to go to extra math classes just because of one bad grade on a test.
âYou failed this test, that means you're struggling with the material. I have no choice but to get you a tutor honey, Iâm sorryâ mom says, trying to lift weight off of the situation.
Your mom had always worried about your school performance and your grades, and when your results started declining, especially in math class, she started worrying.
And now here you are, in an almost deserted library, waiting for a math tutor your parents had found online. You casually scroll on your phone while waiting, texting your friends and whining for the nth time about how much you hate the situation youâre in.
The silence of the library paired with the occasional vibrations of your phone was quickly interrupted by deliberate and polite steps.
You hear a soft voice call for you, making you look up and remove one of your earbuds.Â
âSorry?â, you say in confusion, looking up at the stranger.
âAre you y/n? Iâm here for the math tutoring, Iâm Chenleâ, the handsome stranger says as your eyes still readjust to his features.
He stretches out his hand, gaining a giggle from you as his politeness was shocking for someone so young. Your own hand comes up and shakes his, the touch making you undeniably nervous. âYeah, Iâm y/nâ.
The next weeks passed in an instant. Chenle was helpful, attentive and patient. He would bring you your favorite drinks to every session, would memorize every detail you had trouble with and bring new material for you to study on the following schedules, and most of all, he cared about you, about your improvement.
âI canât get this right!â you groan in desperation, the question youâve been at for the last half hour taking all your brain power for the day.
âYes, you canâ, Chenle would say, almost annoyed at the way you would give up on yourself so easily.
âOh, really? And how come I canât solve one of the easiest problems on this worksheet?â, you asked, looking with furrowed eyebrows and crossed arms to your calm tutor.
âI know this is annoying, but youâre not seeing the whole pictureâŚâ, he says, earning an eye roll from you as he leans over your work with his own pencil, starting to explain.
âYou actually started well,â he says, pointing to the beginning equations you had calculated, a shrug being the only reaction you could provide. âBut here, you just changed one of the multiplying signs by a diving oneâ, he points out, your furrowed eyebrows now turning into an entirely surprised expression.
He finished the equation swiftly, your head scratching not in confusion, but in awe of how such a small mistake could make such a huge difference. Your head is not propped down, shame and hopelessness being the only emotions this past week has caused you.
âChenle, the test is in three daysâŚâ you now say in a low voice, Chenle leaning back and listening attentively, âI donât feel confidentâ you admit.
âLook, I know small mistakes like this can take a toll on youâ he confesses, already recognizing the way your brain functions, âBut making a small mistake doesnât take away all the hard work youâve done till nowâ. You now look up at him, a glint of tears in your eyes making his heart break. He continues âIâm sure youâll do great, I know it.â
His words make you a bit more hopeful, a chuckle escaping your lips when you realize the sudden silence of the library, making Chenle also smile.
âThanksâ you say, grateful he didnât judge you.
A week goes by. The test had gone okay, at least you thought, but Chenle knew, even over the phone, that something wasnât right.
âYou donât sound too confidentâ the boy said, his voice being heard over your phone that was laying on your bathroom sink while you got ready in the mirror.
âI donât know, itâs just⌠the results will be out tomorrow, and I donât know what to expectâ you sighed, not wanting to think about the score too much.
âI know youâre good, trust meâ Chenleâs raspy voice said, making you undeniably shiver, âDonât think about it too much, though, itâs just a test anywayâ, he says.
âEasy for you to sayâ you chuckle.
Chenle lets out a breathy chuckle, too âWhat can I sayâ, he says with a fake cocky attitude.
âOH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GODâ, your screams say, the entirety of the library turning towards you and even a few people letting out a âShushâ.
Chenle turns toward the sound, your face making him smile right away.
âHey, everything okay?â, he asks with slight concern, due to your worryingly rapid breathing.
You donât respond, though, throwing yourself onto his arms and hugging him so tightly his lungs run out of any oxygen they contained before.
âI got a ninety one!â you finally exclaim, pulling away from the embrace to meet an amused Chenle.
âSee, I told youâ he says teasingly, making you giggle.
âThank you, you know, for everythingâ you say now, more aware of the silence of the library, that makes you both giggle again.
âIt was all you, you know? I just⌠gave you an extra pushâ he says, shrugging in a fake attempt at nonchalant.
You playfully hit his arm, earning a laugh from both of you.
