Aqua Regia is a mixture of nitric acid and hydrocholric acid, optimically in a molar ratio of 1:3 .It is a yellow orange / Red fuming liquid that can dissolve the noble metals gold and platinum though not all the metals. Upon mixing Conc. Nitric acid and Conc. hydrochloric acid, chemical reactions occur. These reactions result in volatile products Nitrosyl chloride and Chlorine gas. HNO3 + 3HCl -------------> NOCl + 2Cl +2H2O as evidenced by fuming nature and characteristic yellow colour of Aqua Regia. As the volatile components escape from the solution the aqua regia escapes its potency.
