A Galapagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis niger) on Isla Santa Cruz, Galapagos, Ecuador

Great news! An expedition leaded by Parque Nacional Galapagos y Save Galapagos, found a female Fernandina Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidis Phantasticus) in Fernandina Island, this species was thought to be extinct in 1906, when a single dead male was found, more than 100 years ago. The info was corrobated by Ecuador Environment Minister Marcelo Mata.
At least 14 species of giant tortoise once lived on Galapagos Islands, nowadays, only 10 species living on six islands remain. Researchers believed volcanic activity had wiped Fernandina Giant Tortoise out.

Red Foot Tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonaria) are found across Central and South America, and have been introduced on several Caribbean islands. Offspring gender is determined by the temperature of the nest; warmer conditions produce more female young.
