Transparent Discord v1.0
Last night, I added the final touches to the first release of TransparentDiscord. In its current state, the app can interact with any preexisting text chat, set the userās online status, display images, and create private chats, all in a Hangouts-like transparent UI. Many features, both basic and Discord specific are still missing from the app, such as the ability to send images, the ability to make group chats, message reactions, and custom emoji. Moving forward, my plan is to first bring the app up to par with Hangouts, then begin adding in Discord specific features. Following that, I may begin looking into adding call support. Along the way, Iāll also improve the UI to the best of my ability. As always, questions and feedback are welcome. If you run into any issues, you can let me know here or over on GitHub. The repository can be found here, and the release can be found here.
Transparent Discord
I recently made a post discussing chat clients, the direction Google is heading with Hangouts, and my intent to create an alternative to Hangouts for people who want a floating, transparent chat client. So far, things are looking really good! I have a basic Swing GUI which currently functions with private text chats. It isnāt pretty, but it works functions well enough. I chose to abandon Qt for the GUI, as I am far more familiar with Swing. The present feature set is relatively limited; the program can only interact with Direct Messages that have already been created, it is only capable of displaying text, and the interface needs some aesthetic attention. Today, I implemented profile images, both in chat and as the floating buttons that open the chat UI. Youāre welcome to check the project out on GitHub, but youāll have to build it yourself for now. Once I add a more user-friendly login system, Iāll start uploading prebuilt jars. Currently, the jar must be launched on the command line and given the Discord User Token on stdin. If anyone is interested in contributing, Iād be happy to have help. Fair warning though, I donāt have a ton of experience collaborating on code. Iāll be on vacation for approximately the next week, but I expect to have a fully-functional if somewhat utilitarian version for text chat by the end of the summer.
The Last Straw: A quasi-rant about chat clients
If you use Google Hangouts at all, youāre probably aware of Googleās desperate attempts to kill the service. It started about a year ago when Android users began seeing a banner urging them to change SMS apps. Not a big deal by itself, but still sort of annoying. Then they overhauled the desktop extension, abandoning the docked tab interface and opting for a more traditional, Slack-like experience. Fortunately, the Hangouts Chrome App (separate from the extension, for some reason) sported a floating, transparent UI similar to Facebookās Chat Heads (this UI is not supported on Mac, but fortunately I had already moved over to Linux at that point). So at this point, we had a website interface, a Chrome extension without the transparent UI, and a Chrome App with the transparent UI. But hey. Variety! Shortly after this change, Google changed the default setting for the App to be the traditional, windowed experience. Transparent UI was still accessible via the settings menu, but it seemed as though Google was making a threat. Somewhere along the way, Google announced that they wanted Hangouts to be more business focused than consumer focused, instructing users to switch over to Allo, their new chat client with Google Assistant integration.
Which all brings us to today. Or more precisely, yesterday. In the process of using my computer, I had switched my monitor input to Windows (I have a virtual machine running with GPU pass-through for gaming) thus hiding my primary Linux screen (which Hangouts resides on). Upon switching back, I was greeted with the windowed, non-transparent, non-overlay, not-at-all-what-I-want-in-a-chat-client default Hangouts UI.Ā āThatās odd,ā I thought to myself, already beginning to sweat as I opened up the settings. Scrolling down to where the transparent UI option usually is confirmed my fear: Google had finally made good on their threat.
So I did what any sane internet goer would do: I checked the Google subreddit, only to find a number of other irritated users. A number of people made the wise suggestion of leaving a negative review on the Chrome store page, and I added my voice to the masses of others. Fast forward a day, and Transparent UI was re-enabled. But for how long?
Finally getting to my point, Iām sick of being tossed around, with features that contribute a large portion to the way I use my devices being dropped or changed. How long until Hangouts disappears all together? The most unfortunate part: Google is the only one who has gotten desktop chat right (at least for me). No other service (that Iāve found, at least) offers a floating, transparent, always present UI. So Iāve decided to make one. Iām currently in the process of writing a Java program using this Discord APIĀ and Qt Jambi. My intent is to mimic the Hangouts UI, while providing some minor improvements and adjustments to make it better suited to Discord. If I get a basic version working, I intend to put the project up on GitHub, as I suspect Iām not the only person on the internet with this problem. If youāre interested, stay posted for a GitHub link. Hopefully I can pull this off before Google finished putting the nails in Hangoutsās coffin.Ā

Is the Discord release still planned for today?
I was just on my way to do this! ;) Had to get my go-juice first. āā”ā” This message delighted me, anon. I'm glad you're excited!
Happy Earth Day! šš³š·š·š·
I hope it's beautiful and dazzling wherever you are. Here, the daffodils are out and the tulips are beginning to peek. My rose bushes are getting their leaves back. And last night, there was a big lightning storm! This planet is awesome.
It's also the day of our DISCORD SERVER LAUNCH. š
Click here to join our Discord server. If you have any problems, from joining to selecting reaction roles to et cetera, let me know immediately! It's entirely within the realm of possibility that I messed something up. I'm not very techy, but I did my best and will continue to!
Also, I have some important news ... Kaleidoscope World will open on Jcink SATURDAY, APRIL 29 ahead of May Day the following Monday.
Generally, in the normal course of the site, I will not be maintaining a reservation system for face claims/played-bys. But for this next week leading up to opening, I will run a one-time reserves system. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME ANYTHING YET; I'M NOT READY. I will announce the start of the reserves tomorrow 10 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time (Coordinated Universal Time is 4 hours ahead of EDT). I hope to see you soon! P.S. I have one more annoying playlist for you all! Happy Earth Day!
