Panic! At The Disco Bests One Of Imagine Dragons’ Most Impressive Chart Accomplishments
Hugh McIntyre
Once again, Panic! at the Disco is comfortable at No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs chart with their unstoppable (or nearly unstoppable) single “High Hopes,” which has now led the charge on the genre-specific ranking for a history-making 42 nonconsecutive frames. The band stopped promoting the tracks featured on their most recent No. 1 album Pray for the Wicked some time ago, but rock fans have continued to buy and stream the biggest hits from the set non-stop, and rock radio stations can’t stop playing two tracks in particular…and now thanks to the immense popularity of just a pair of songs, the band has made history on the chart and beaten one of the most impressive records set by another superstar act.
Panic! at the Disco has now ruled the Hot Rock Songs for 53 consecutive weeks, which is the most impressive stretch at the top by any act in the decade-long history of the tally. Before this frame, Panic! was tied with fellow rockers Imagine Dragons, who once controlled the list for 52 frames in a row, but now a new record has been established.
Almost exactly two years ago, Imagine Dragons began what would go on to become a historically-long tenure atop the Hot Rock Songs chart. The band’s single “Thunder” jumped to the peak position and led the charge for 21 weeks before stepping aside to allow follow-up single “Whatever It Takes” to vault to the summit. That song ruled for 17 spins, and then “Thunder” returned for another three spins in the spotlight.
After its second stint at No. 1, “Thunder” relented for “Natural,” the first single from the band’s then-upcoming album Origins. After 11 weeks in the driver’s seat, Panic! at the Disco finally lifted to the penthouse with “High Hopes,” which has only made room for fellow Pray for the Wickedsingle “Hey Look Ma, I Made It.” That popular cut dominated the Hot Rock Songs chart for 11 frames in between the 42-week run enjoyed by “High Hopes.”
Panic! at the Disco now claims the longest run atop the Hot Rock Songs chart, but they probably aren’t going to fall anytime soon. At this point, it’s difficult to predict when the band will finally allow another to lead, as both “High Hopes” and “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” continue to perform extremely well, landing at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively this time around.
