good morning night
@charmandersoo Baekhyun likes to be spontaneous. It’s not like he can help it, in all truth, but he wouldn’t do anything to prevent it either and he can’t say it for sure, but he thinks Kyungsoo likes that about him as well. Even if he shrugs and says it’s annoying not to know what he’s ‘planning’.
“What is your favorite time of the day?” Baekhyun asks one day, completely out of the blue, of course. They are peeling potatoes and Baekhyun is trying to do it the right way -- the way Kyungsoo taught him -- so the other looks at him and probably blinks. Baekhyun doesn’t catch it because he’s busy trying to prevent the peel hanging out from breaking (simply because he wants to pick it up and go ‘tadah’ with it so that Kyungsoo can be impressed about him having a perfect spiral-shaped peel).
“Mine is the afterglow.”
(’that’s not even a time of the day,’) he would be so offended if the person he’s asking wasn’t Kyungsoo, but still, he looks up at him and frowns. “of course it is. it’s the light or radiance remaining in the sky after the sun has set.”
(’so you just like night better than day’)
Baekhyun frowns again. “I’ll show you and you’ll get it.”
That day, Baekhyun drags Kyungsoo out when he is trying to get cozy under his blanket on the couch and despite all the groans and death threats, it all subsides when Baekhyun simply drapes the blanket over Kyungsoo’s shoulders and effectively tugs him out of their shared space. Kyungsoo is his grumpy self all the way until Baekhyun stops at the spot he deems perfect. They don’t leave the mansion’s grounds, but the place is already huge as it is, they would have to walk for days before they reached the ‘border’. Baekhyun deems that spot one of his favorites, but Kyungsoo thinks every spot is Baekhyun’s favorite. (he may have a list). Kyungsoo is not sure if he gets what Baekhyun is trying to prove or show him, but he does admire the setting all the same and Baekhyun is chattier as ever, obviously excited for sharing that experience with the dragon shifter so maybe that’s what’s beautiful about the afterglow: Baekhyun.
The blanket is draped around the younger’s shoulders when the night falls on them. That quick moment of magic colors adorning the sky passes quickly, but they don’t leave as soon as it ends. Baekhyun has a few more stories to share and Kyungsoo seems to be entertained; strangely in the mood to listen, and so, he shares the source of his warmth. Baekhyun doesn’t stop talking, but holds the tip of the blanket before Kyungsoo’s arm does the same and now it’s not just the blanket over Baekhyun’s shoulder, but the shifter’s arm as well. Kyungsoo’s hand rests on his shoulder and he makes himself smaller, tentatively snuggling against the other. The moon is already high in the sky when they leave but one hour later Kyungsoo sneezes twice and there’s a finger pointed in Baekhyun’s direction. (’I’m going to die now. Take responsibility’) Baekhyun takes the cue and scurries to the kitchen. He has this down, he knows the recipe by heart too but only because he has a sweet tooth and Kyungsoo is in need of a sugar rush. His bottom lip is trapped by his teeth that bite it in concentration as he whisks away as if his life depended on it. Kyungsoo has sent him a look of worry that screams judgment but Baekhyun carries on with his mission even when scalding drops land on top of his hand, making him wince slightly, but immediately lick it off. Kyungsoo is ready to tell him that he’ll do it, but Baekhyun chirps a “DONE!” that ends up slightly more high-pitched than the shifter may have desired, so he gets a groan instead. Baekhyun tiptoes to get the mugs from the upper cupboard and adds a mental note for them to place those maybe next to the rest of the cups that can be reached better. Kyungsoo whines about Baekhyun doing unnecessary things like using mugs they never use just because, but Baekhyun likes to be thorough. He pours the thick hot chocolate on the mugs, slides one towards Kyungsoo and clinks his mug against the other’s. (’What’s this?’) “Me taking responsibility. Drink, it’ll warm you up.” he says before doing the same. The mug warms his hands and the chocolate makes him hum in delight so Kyungsoo stares even though he sips on his chocolate as well. Baekhyun smiles in return and then pretends he doesn’t see when Kyungsoo flushes red right after.
__
Baekhyun is watching an infomercial and tilting his head. Kyungsoo thinks it’s the most amusing thing in the world because he looks like a dog except he’s lacking a tail and floppy ears. “Hey kyungsoo?” (’WHAT?”) The tone catches Baekhyun off-guard (and Kyungsoo as well if he’s being honest, but they pretend that the shifter’s voice didn’t almost crack at the end nor that he replied a few decibels too loud after being surprise-called). “Do dragons like sweaters?” Kyungsoo doesn’t reply, but the ‘what?’ lingers above his head and if he was a cartoon, it would hit him like a ton of bricks falling from the sky, spelling out the word for Baekhyun. “You know, sweaters for dragons --” (”I’m not a dog!”) is all Baekhyun hears before Kyungsoo stomps away, mumbling something about dogs and humans with their stupid ideas) Baekhyun thinks Kyungsoo would look adorable wearing a knitted sweater while in dragon form. On the first day of December, Kyungsoo wants to leave the room as soon as he enters. Baekhyun is there, being swollen by a whole tree while trying to fix it’s footing and making it stand. Of course, the tree is fake -- Kyungsoo would kill him if he had gotten a real tree just for the sake of decorating it. Looking around, he can see the boxes on top of the coffee table: ‘40 red christmas ball ornament - shatterproof’ he reads on one of them before exhaling so loud that Baekhyun whips his head back to look at him. “Oh, I didn’t hear you coming in.” he trips over the pile of entangled christmas lights he had set aside but, thankfully, doesn’t fall. Kyungsoo sighs, loudly again.
(’what are you doing?’) “Setting up the Christmas tree. Wanna help me?” (’no’), he says, and then ends up helping anyway. Baekhyun’s happiness is contagious, the dragon shifter concludes, within the hours that they take to decorate the big tree now occupying the right corner of their living room. Kyungsoo doesn’t even know how Baekhyun managed to drag that thing all the way there, but he rather not ask anyway, but he can BET that Gain and the professor had something to do with it. However, that thing does look pretty, all decorated with sparkly red balls from top to bottom -- Baekhyun’s favorite color -- and Kyungsoo stands back to watch the younger press the button to turn the lights on. And it’s hard not to smile when Baekhyun beams immediately after, eyes sparkling as much as the lights on the tree do. He looks like a child, experiencing something for the very first time, but this time Kyungsoo doesn’t scoff and definitely doesn’t tell him that he doesn’t particularly like Christmas; that he’d be fine with no tree and no sparkling lights or red ornaments dangling from fake branches. Baekhyun turns around and his smile lights up the room more than all those artificial lights could ever do. And maybe his stomach flips around once or twice, but he takes a deep breath and tells all those butterflies to stop flapping around. __ Baekhyun has red pajama pants that have one huge reindeer face printed on the back and frankly, Kyungsoo thinks that is very distracting because he can’t concentrate on his toast when he can only stare at the reindeer on Baekhyun’s ass. He nearly chokes when the younger turns around too fast, finally having been able to open the jar of apricot jam that he’d been fighting with for the past thirty seconds. “So, I’ve been researching, and I found the best turkey recipe in the world!” (’we’re not having turkey, it’s just us!’) Kyungsoo counters, shoving the other half of his toast in his mouth unceremoniously while Baekhyun pouts and then squeaks a yes we are! but when he sounds demanding and Kyungsoo raises an eyebrow, he presses his lips together. -- here it comes -- (’stop pouting!’) “I’m not pouting!” he chimes before pouting even harder until Kyungsoo sighs and utters a ‘let me see that’. Baekhyun slides his tablet towards the shifter then before he decides that it would be better if he can sit next to Kyungsoo and show him the roasted potatoes with lime and that sinful chocolate cake with coconut frosting that he’s been dreaming of. Kyungsoo groans and protests all week, but on the 24th, there’s stuffed turkey and potatoes roasting in the oven; a cake cut in half on the counter and a puppy sticking his finger on the bowl next to it. (’stop eating the frosting!’), he smacks Baekhyun’s hand, making him welp before a string of laughter follows through filling the kitchen. A pleasant sound to Kyungsoo’s ears. While the shifter frosts the cake, Baekhyun settles on the chair across from him, fumbling with the red ribbons to tie bows on the cookie bags he’s been working on. Somehow, he managed to follow a recipe for ginger cookies (with Kyungsoo’s help, of course) and had a blast with the gingerbread men cookie cutter. Kyungsoo still thinks it’s weird that he went through the trouble just to give those away, but it’s cute nonetheless and later on he walks with Baekhyun as he leaves two bags hanging on each doorknob around campus with a poinsettia flower adorning each of them and a little sticky note that read ‘merry Christmas’. __ It’s only them at the dinner table and Kyungsoo knows that if not encouraged, he can eat very little, but he also knows that due to Baekhyun’s power, he can also eat a lot and be okay with it given his fast metabolism. Baekhyun watches the other put more potatoes next to the piece of meat he’s having and for once doesn’t complain about it being too much. He saves some space for the cake, of course, and then raves about being the best cake he ever ate in his life. Kyungsoo dismisses it for a moment, thinking it’s simply the other mutant being his over-exaggerated self, but wonders about the boy’s choice and the combination of odd flavors (in Kyungsoo’s opinion). Certainly, he must have eaten something similar before and the older voices his curiosity. “I’m not sure. I may have, but I can’t remember if I did or if I just thought it would be super delicious. The flavor does seem to bring a sensorial memory, but I can only remember the feeling, not the occasion. I think this is my favorite cake.” Baekhyun concludes, smiling, and Kyungsoo mimics him with a smaller smile of his own, but inside, he can’t help the slight pang to his heart at what sounds to be a happy memory that Baekhyun can’t seem to remember. He thinks it’s so unfair that the universe seems to always want to deprive the younger of the few happy memories he had, but insists in allowing the bad ones to stay longer. Kyungsoo decides that he’ll memorize that recipe and make that cake for Baekhyun every time he wants so that he’ll never forget about it ever again and while he may not be linked to the boy’s first memory of it, he hopes he can link a new -- happy one -- to it now. __ Baekhyun has been gone for ten minutes. Kyungsoo is still huddled under his two blankets in the living room watching some old movie on TV. Only his eyes framed by his thick eyebrows and maybe a bit of hair can be seen, but he looks when Baekhyun calls him. Baekhyun watches Kyungsoo drag his socked feet to where he is, close to the living room’s entrance, holding the smallest bag ever and his eyebrows go from confused frowning to shooting up in surprise. Baekhyun stretches out both his arms, pushing the bag into Kyungsoo’s chest. “Your present,” he informs. (’tell me it’s not a dragon sweater’) Baekhyun rolls his eyes. “Look at the size of that bag, do you really think I could fit one in there?” Baekhyun is right and Kyungsoo fumbles with the bag, pulling out a pair of fluffy blue mittens. “I didn’t have the time to wrap them up prettily.” he confesses, even though he’s not too apologetic, he’s simply explaining, but Kyungsoo is still inspecting those. (’what do I do? I didn’t get you a present, you should have told me.’) Baekhyun thinks that Kyungsoo looks adorable all flustered and fumbling; a mix between sorry and cutely annoyed. “You made me a cake, that’s your present” Baekhyun says, trying to dissipate Kyungsoo’s worries over making up to him somehow when there is nothing to make up to. Baekhyun is more than happy with his christmas night and with the fact that they got to spend it together. “You know, this is the first christmas I got to spend where I was okay with the whole ‘spirit’ of the thing. I’m not saying I spent these last five years alone on christmas or anything, I mean, the professor came and so did the mrs. They used to buy a fruit cake and bring food from the cafeteria and say they had saved me a plate -- because they knew I wouldn’t come out to the joined dinner at the main hall. I don’t know why I never felt like going, I didn’t really remember having nice memories of this holiday, I never really commemorated it. But you know, because this year was full of changes and nice things, I thought I should start a new tradition of celebrating it. I really like christmas trees, I discovered, and I know you never went to the christmas gathering dinner either -- the mrs. told me -- so... maybe next year we can go? both of us, together, first timers.” Baekhyun suggests and while it sounds like a proposition he would refuse, Kyungsoo allows himself to think about it. (’but the present --’) the shifter insists, still feeling bad about not giving Baekhyun one, thinking the other was simply going to dismiss it again but then he tilts his head -- and smirks. “Weeeeell --” he drags the word playfully, pointing up and making Kyungsoo look. He registers the mistletoe dangling above the door frame, way over both their heads, but doesn’t register the intention. Baekhyun gasps at the shifter’s ignorance regarding the tradition -- which he had read in books only too -- and the consequence of assuming the other would know because now it’s in his hands. It’s weird if he scoffs and tells them to go watch tv because now Kyungsoo is intrigued and asking if he wants mistletoe for next christmas. Baekhyun wants to facepalm, but he’s too flushed already. “No, you see, there’s this tradition. It’s a human tradition, nothing bad happens if you don’t follow it, it’s not like those superstition things where if you pass under a ladder you’ll be unlucky or anything like that!” Baekhyun is ranting “It’s just a thing people do.” (’What? They stand under the mistletoe? Then what?’) Baekhyun’s cheeks mimic the color of his hair right there and then and he curses his luck. maybe he’s getting sick. “... I can’t remember” he deadpans then and Kyungsoo mimics him before softly hitting his head and mumbling (‘idiot’) in between teeth. They fall asleep on the couch, of course. There are two blankets covering them and Baekhyun, weirdly falls asleep first. Yet, that doesn’t mean Kyungsoo can help the way he adjusts himself so well that the shifter falls into the comfort of his warmth and the soft limbs surrounding him. When he wakes up, he considers moving to his own bedroom, maybe even carrying Baekhyun to his because it’s Christmas and he is feeling generous but discards the idea soon after. He has an arm under Baekhyun’s head, pillowing it as the boy sleeps soundly. He feels like a creep, or maybe like the protagonist of a cheesy rom-com, but he can’t help smiling at the sight of the young mutant sleeping. He looks delicate and soft, serene and fragile almost even though he knows Baekhyun is everything but fragile and helpless. Some nights, he wonders how anyone could ever think of hurting such a pure creature and his anger crawls under his skin, albeit shortlived. He thinks back to a few hours before, allowing his smile to grow wider at one particular moment of the night and inwardly praising his own ability to conceal his amusement at one particular piece of knowledge he didn’t mention having. Slowly, he leans forward, pressing his lips softly against Baekhyun’s and his eyes flutter closed as he does; as he inhales the boy’s scent with the distance that he has closed between them. He pulls back just as slowly, glad for not having awakened the younger who simply buries his nose deeper against his arm, before he leans back as well with a soft whisper. ( ‘merry christmas’ )
