New Track from Charley Bickers // Our Frail Hearts [MP3]
The title track from Charley Bickers' debut album, Our Frail Hearts. This tune is taken from the first of two forthcoming albums that will be released in quick succession next year. The first album is scheduled for release in February 2013 and is perhaps the more intimate of the two. Like much of the first album Our Frail Hearts has been written, recorded and produced by Charley. He has also made every video and designed each piece of artwork himself, ensuring that all aspects of the record are uniquely personal. The track is built around a choir of richly layered vocals and the whole song was written and recorded in just a few hours. Charley describes the creative process for this one particular track being much like "picking an apple from the tree. It felt as if the song was already written, I just had to rush to get it all down before I lost it". He is also singing on several songs for the Black Submarine album. The project is the newly formed band consisting of members from The Verve and Goldfrapp. This album too is set for release next year. On top of the three albums scheduled for release, Charley will also be releasing his first book in conjunction with his debut album. An extensive tour is currently being planned throughout 2013 so it looks like he may well have a very busy twelve moths ahead of him. MP3 CHARLEY BICKERS - "Our Frail Hearts"

BirdBrother, a 60s inspired folkrock once duo now quartet. They play songs very true to their taste and inspirations, though for me their best moment was their cover of Dead Flowers. Authentic, alright, not too exciting.
Abi Wade was the reason why me and a friend went to this gig. Her set of songs (most of them on her cello, and two on e-piano) was the best and most innovative performance of the night. She's not only playing her cello, but simultaneously providing percussions: each foot is busy playing a drum and a tambourine, her hand switches between slapping or picking the strings and knocking, beating or scratching the cello's body. She brought people closer to the stage and even caught the attention of the earlier steadily murmuring crowd in the back. An exciting performance, a charming artist with admittedly whiskey fused braveness. Rob Orchard took a nice picture of her performing.
Charley Bickers' folky songs seem to be - similar to BirdBrother - stuck in a certain music period: Bickers' looks and his music are very indie Brit pop, in spirit a distant cousin of the late Paul Weller. He played with a band of three, but took great care to stay in control of it all, creating funny moments like wandering back and fro between the pedal for the smoke machine and the microphone instead of leaving the fog control to the bass player next to the machine. Very pop, a bit monotonous after a while, answered by a constantly growing murmuring from the audience.

"Hi Guys, I hope you all had a great christmas and that 2013 is treating you well so far. I'm going to be giving away my first album 'Our Frail Hearts' as a free download in February. Amazingly quite a few of you lovely people have got in touch to tell me that you don't want the album for free and that you'd like to pay for it. I'm sure that doesn't go for all of you but it is music to my ears anyway as my experience of running an independent label for the last years had pretty much lead me to believe that no-one really bought music anymore.
