I sit at my desk as the ship sways with the sea.
The rest of the crew left for the land to the town near here a few hours ago, and I opted to stay behind, for fear that I’ll be recognized and brought back to the palace.
I sigh and stare, boredom filling me to the brim.
There’s suddenly a more aggressive wave and the ship sways a little harder. I hear something clunk loudly inside a drawer, and I open it curiously.
A beat-up journal with a bright pink cover lays inside and I grin lightly: it’s my diary from when I was little– maybe five or six?
The first page says, in huge, messy cursive letters:
THIS JOURNAL BELONGS TO PRINCESS CHARLOTTE THORNTON
I leaf through the pages, cringing slightly at my obnoxious joy in most of the entries.
One in particular catches my eye.
It’s maybe midway through the journal and is titled JUNE 13. I guess I didn’t think putting the year was important…
The entry reads:
Dearest journal,
Today was a really fun day!! I went dress shopping with Miss Cynthiaッ! I got a really pretty yellow dress that sparkles a lot. But then afterwards Miss Cynthia sent me to the playgrounds while she traded and stuff. But!! While I was there I met this boy…
~~FLASHBACK~~
The bun that Miss Cynthia put my hair in hurts.
A lot.
But I’m not allowed to take it out because it’s rude… I think that’s really stupid.
I sit on a warm wooden bench and kick my legs back and forth.
I have to wait here for Miss Cynthia and it’s really boring because all the parents of the kids are telling their kids that I’m the princess and to leave me alone.
I’m not even wearing my crown!!!!!!
Someone taps on my shoulder.
I turn my head to see a short, messy haired boy with freckles and skin that make him look like an almond chocolate piece.
Chocolate Boy says, “Hiya! D’you wanna play??”
I’m kinda surprised! He’s the only kid here who’s actually talked to me instead of saying something dumb like “Your Highness” and doing a little bow.
“Okay!” I tell him enthusiastically and jump off the bench, chasing after the boy, who ran away almost as soon as I first said yes.
We run around the playground for what feels like forever until Miss Cynthia comes back.
She sees me running with my new friend, Chocolate Boy, and has this look on her face I’ve never seen on her before.
She looks… angry.
But why? I’m finally having fun with a kid my age. Is it so wrong for a princess to be friends with a regular kid?
“Princess Charlotte!” she calls, and everyone in the vicinity turns to look at me and Chocolate Boy. Everyone bows except for the boy and I try to hide behind the blonde strands of hair that fell out of my bun while we were running.
“Hiya, Miss Cynthia!” I say with a smile, hiding my embarrassment as well as I can.
“Oh, dear, there you are! I was wondering where you had gone. Come now, we must be going back to the palace,” Miss Cynthia says as she drags me away from my friend and back to the carriage.
“But…” I trail off when I realize I won’t be able to stop Miss Cynthia. “I want to say bye to my friend!”
“Oh, sweetheart…” Miss Cynthia sounds a bit funny and I don’t know what the emotion in her voice is. “He’s not your friend. A wonderful princess like you has friends that share her status. He’s a commoner, not nearly good enough for a friend of the heir princess.”
“Well, then I don’t want to be the heir princess anymore,” I grumble, crossing my arms as I get in my seat in the carriage.
~~FLASHBACK END~~
A soft smile spreads across my face as I realize the “Chocolate Boy” as I had – mildly rudely, might I add – dubbed him is really Matteo.
I wonder if he still remembers this.
He probably does.
He remembers a lot of things about me.
It’s one of the things I love about him.

“Ty?” I shout. My voice rings through the white hallway as I look for my brother. My mom had asked him to walk me and my sister, Lavinia, to our friend’s house.
Because apparently fourteen-year-old girls can’t walk themselves twenty minutes away without being abducted or something.
“Ty!” I’m nearly screaming by the time I round the corner to the entryway.
My dad’s in the room to the right – the kitchen – and he gives me a weird look.
“Do you know where Ty is, Dad?” I ask him.
He adjusts the bandanna keeping his black hair from falling into his eyes as he says, “Not really. Have you tried texting him?”
“I… didn’t think of that.”
I take out my phone – nearly dropping it in the process and earning an eye roll from Dad – and open the Messages app. I click on the picture of my brother, looking like ever the idiot, and quickly tap away at the keyboard.
“I’m gonna keep looking for him,” I tell my dad. He nods and leans against the counter.
“Bye, Lulu!” he calls.
I flick my long black hair out of my face and turn back around, heading to the stairs.
Lav’s in her room, supposedly getting ready but probably reading an ebook or something. Maybe she knows where Tymir is.
I run up the stairs, and my mom’s klutz side shines through as I nearly die while tripping.
Thankfully, I don’t have to risk my life for much longer – Lav’s room is closest to the stairs.
I knock twice and step into her room.
The pale blue walls are decorated by string lights and posters from various shows and movies Lav likes, and the hardwood floor is covered by the fluffiest white carpet you’ve ever seen.
Lav lies on the bed, stomach down and legs kicked up behind her, scrolling on her phone.
“Lav,” I say.
My twin rolls over onto her back, shakes her shorter black hair out of her face, and says, incredibly monotonously, “What?”
“D’you know where Ty is?”
“I’ve been in here this entire time, Alouette,” Lav says with a sigh. “How could I possibly know where he is?”
I groan. My phone dings in my hand, and I glance at the screen, hoping for a text from my older brother. I frown when I read the message – it’s just a rain alert.
“Go ask Mom,” Lav suggests.
I nod and leave her room, shutting the door behind me. Walking down the quiet hallway, I look at the pictures on the walls. The one that always catches my eye is the class photo of me and Lav’s fourth grade.
Lav hated that year so much because of the bullies that would call the two of us cow-looking people just because we both have vitiligo. I just ignored them, but Lav took it WAY harder than I did.
I shake myself from the less-than-happy memories as I stop in front of the door to my parents’ office.
I knock on the door, and thankfully, my mom’s not in a meeting or anything, because she says, “Come in!”
“Hey, Mom,” I say as I walk into the office. “Do you know where Ty is?”
She rotates her seat to face me and her brown eyes are half-lidded. “Is he really not home? He’s supposed to walk you over in—” she glances at the clock on the wall— “five minutes!”
“I know. I thought you knew where he is.”
“Have you checked outside?”
I blink. “I’m learning one thing about myself today. That I’m an idiot.”
“Lulu, you’re not an idi-”
I cut my mom off with an eyebrow raise.
She laughs and I leave with a goodbye.
I run all the way to the backyard door, and once I’m in the soft grass, I yell, “Ty! Where are you?!”
“Over here!” I hear my brother shout from the left. I dash over to his voice and find myself staring at the upside down, blond, freckled face of my brother.
“Why are you in a tree?” I ask.
“Why aren’t you in a tree?” he retorts.
“You’re stuck, aren’t you?” I sigh.
A sheepish smile crosses his face.
My sigh turns into a groan.
“You moron.”
I glare at him once I realize I have to go back inside to get Dad.
As I walk back inside, Ty calls to me, “Go faster! I don’t want Mom to yell at me!”
I shout back, “You deserve it!” with a grin.
Back in the kitchen, I tell my dad what had happened. He looks about as exasperated as I feel while we walk back. My dad goes outside while I instead head upstairs to get my sister and my bag.
Lav and I race to the backyard – I won, of course – to see Ty dusting himself off and Dad heading back inside.
He ruffles Lav’s hair and says, “Have fun, girls!”
“Alright, Ty,” Lav says. She glares at our brother. “Are you gonna walk us over now or make us even more late than we already are?”
