Following a group tutorial yesterday, I am confident that my first draft is a solid foundation for my final submission that will not require extensive revision. I am certainly happy that no further research will be required. As such I think it is appropriate for me to reflect on the validity of the sources I have reference in the Essay: Adamson, J. (1975) Tex Avery: King of Cartoons Barrier, M. (1999) Hollywood Cartoons, Oxford: Oxford University Press Beck, J. (1994) The 50 Greatest Cartoons Maltin, L. (1987) Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons Wells, Paul (2002) Animation and America

These are all books by noted animation historians who have published multiple books on the subject (and in Maltin’s case live action films as well), and would be considered very reliable sources on the subject.

Canemaker, J. (1991) Felix: The Twisted Tales of the World’s Most Famous Cat

John Canemaker is in much the same category, and in this case he has written the (as far as I could tell) only book exclusively about Felix; an invaluable source!

Currell, S. (2009) American Culture in the 1920s Halliwell, M. (2007) American Culture in the 1950s Boyle, P. (2014) Eisenhower The first two are essentially “beginner’s guide” books on American life in the 20s and 50s, and would perhaps be a bit too basic for an in-depth essay on those periods themselves, but I think are a relevant source for providing some historical context to strengthen my essay. The later is a notable book on Eisenhower, American president during the production of the Trans-Lux Felix the Cat series. An unusual source an essay on animation, but it led to me realising that American was in/coming out of a recession while the series was being produced, something I was not aware of. 

Brooks, J. (2003) Could That Be All, Folks? Looney Tunes Whiff for Bros, Observer Cart, M. (1991), The Cat With the Killer Personality, New York Times Solomon, C. (1988) Mickey Mouse: World’s Most Famous Rodent Nears 60, and He’s Had More Lives Than a Cat, New York Times.

These are all articles published by Journals with long-standing reputations. The later two perhaps skew closer to op-ed than factual, which I have reflected in the case of Cart, and the content from Solomon’s article is elaborated on within the article is elaborated within the article by quotes from animators working in the industry within that time period. In Solomon’s case he is also a noted animated historian who has published a number of books.

Vogler, C. (1999) Types of Heroes This is an online summary of theories made famous in Vogler’s book The Writer's Journey. The book would have been preferable, but both copies were checked out when I needed it! The information in this, however, is consistent with that which has been discussed in our lectures.
