Why 911: Nashville Feels Low on Drama — and the Ryan Arc That Could Change Everything

I’ve been sitting on this take for a while, and the more I think about it, the more it clicks into place.

So here it is: my theory on 911: Nashville, why it currently feels like it’s missing something… and how a major trauma centered on Ryan could completely shift the show’s direction.

First things first: context. I’m a bit behind (Italy struggles are real), so I’m going off what we’ve seen up to episode 12. But even accounting for that, it feels fair to say: there haven’t been any truly devastating plot twists yet.

And that’s where my theory begins.

The Core Issue: Where’s the Drama?

If you compare Nashville to the original 911 and Lone Star, one thing stands out immediately: those shows live and breathe drama.

Not just surface-level conflict—but deep, character-shaping trauma.

Think about it:

major deaths

illness arcs

addiction and mental health struggles

PTSD

devastating relationship breakdowns

Every main character has been through something that changed them in real time.

In Nashville? That hasn’t really happened yet.

Yes, we’ve had hints of heavy backstories (Roxy especially), but those are past traumas. They’re not unfolding in the present. We’re not watching characters actively break, spiral, rebuild.

And that’s a huge difference.

A Different Narrative DNA: More Telenovela Than Procedural

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Nashville doesn’t feel structured like classic 911. It feels… like a telenovela.

Not in tone or quality—but in narrative construction.

Instead of a fully balanced ensemble, everything seems to orbit around one central nucleus: Chris O’Donnell’s character and his family.

Wife, kids, ex, emotional orbit—everything connects back to that core. The procedural side (the rescues, the emergencies) almost feels like a setting, rather than the main engine.

That’s very telenovela-coded:

central family or couple

extended cast defined by proximity to them

setting as backdrop, not focus

And if that’s the structure…

Then something is missing.

What Telenovelas ALWAYS Have: A Massive Trauma Event

Telenovelas build toward a breaking point. A moment that shatters everything.

And right now? Nashville hasn’t had that moment yet.

Which makes me think…

It’s coming. And when it hits, it’s going to hit hard.

Why Ryan Feels Like the Key

Ryan is, in many ways, the perfect candidate.

And not because he’s messy or chaotic—quite the opposite.

His life is… stable:

loving family

good relationship with parents

resolved sibling dynamics

solid marriage

strong friendships

It’s all very flat in the narrative sense. Calm. Balanced. Safe.

Even his relationship with his wife—while technically “good”—feels more told than shown. We’re not really seeing that emotional intensity, that deep connection on screen.

And then there’s one crucial detail:

His strong desire to have a child.

That’s not just a character trait. That’s setup.

The Theory: A Tragedy That Breaks Everything

Here’s where I think the show might go:

Ryan’s wife gets pregnant. Something happens—an emergency, possibly tied to the job. They lose both her and the baby.

It’s brutal. It’s devastating. And it’s exactly the kind of narrative shock the show is currently lacking.

But more importantly—it would:

give Nashville its first true, present-day trauma arc

completely transform Ryan as a character

inject long-term emotional stakes into the series

From Stability to Collapse… and Then Rebirth

Right now, Ryan is a “nice” character. A stable one.

But after something like that?

He becomes:

closed off

broken

emotionally volatile

forced into a long, painful healing arc

Think:

Eddie after Shannon

Buck during his darker spirals

But tailored to Ryan’s personality.

And from that wreckage…

You get something 911 thrives on:

a new love story.

The Missing Piece: A Central Love Story That Grows On Screen

One of the biggest strengths of the franchise has always been its relationships.

Not just existing couples—but forming ones.

Maddie & Chimney

Athena & Bobby

TK & Carlos

We watched them build, struggle, evolve.

Nashville doesn’t really have that yet.

Most couples feel:

already established

emotionally static

low-stakes

Even the younger pairing (Blue’s storyline) feels sweet, but not… defining.

Ryan, post-trauma, could become the foundation for:

a slow-burn romance

a healing arc

the emotional core of the show

The kind of relationship that anchors the entire narrative.

Final Thought: Potential vs Execution

Right now, 911: Nashville sits in a strange middle ground.

It’s not hitting the emotional heights of the original. But it’s also not fully leaning into the character-driven intensity it could have.

It has potential. A lot of it.

It just needs that one defining moment—the kind that changes everything.

And if I had to bet?

That moment is coming. And it might start with Ryan.

My best friend is a singularity! She was invented in a lab by scientists who accidentally discovered a method of FTL communication via superpositioning multiple possible timelines, and can now appear in multiple places at once. After making contact with the singularity, she expressed interest in learning more about human-centric science and the physical laws of the universe (as much as a singularity can be said to be "interested"), and decided to spend the rest of her days on Earth. A little later, after arriving on Earth, she triggered a chain reaction that destroyed the universe and killed everybody, and was promptly re-created in an isolated bubble of space-time. Now she spends her time scaring the shit out of people with her infinite knowledge of the subtleties of our language, helping people connect with their families and friends they thought had died, and preventing reproductive cloning, which she is convinced is an evolutionary dead end. We have a great time together.

Are you ready to breathe life into your characters and have them leap from the page into the hearts of your readers? Good! Developing characters is one of the greatest enjoyments for writing fiction. So let's get started on this great journey of discovery!

1. Get to Know Your Characters

Before you write convincing characters, you need to really know them. Think of your characters as human beings with past histories, dreams, and flaws. Here are some ways to get to know them better:

Backstory:

What in their past has made them who they are?

Did they have a happy childhood?

Were there any traumatizing events?

This will often determine motivations and actions.

For example, if your character has been brought up in an orphanage, they may have trust issues or perhaps independence.

Personality Traits:

Are they introverted or extroverted, pessimistic or optimistic?

Knowing their core personality will help project what their actions and reactions would be like in a given set of circumstances.

Perhaps your protagonist, Emma, is an extroverted optimist who lights up a room with brightness, even in dire situations.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Nobody is perfect, and your characters shouldn't be either.

Make the characters more human by giving them something both admirable and a flaw that rounds them out.

Emma can be wonderfully brave but very impulsive, leading her sometimes to heroism and other times to disastrous folly.

2. Establish Clear Goals and Motivation:

Characters need goals for the plot to have direction and motivations to explain why they pursue those goals. Ask yourself:

What do they want?

Their wants vary from saving the world to searching for love to achieving personal redemption.

Emily, a draftsman, aches to be a famous explorer, a dream her long-dead father never attained.

Why do they want it?

This can be found in their backstory and personality.

Perhaps Emma's father was an explorer who went missing on a wild search, and now she feels a deep need to carry on his legacy and find out what happened to him.

3. Show People, Activities, and Scenery

Dynamic characters tend to rebuild and alter throughout the story. This is often based on life's complications and conflicts. Here's how to effectively outline your character growth:

Conflict:

Put your characters in situations that push them as far as possible.

These challenges force them to make uncomfortable choices and face their flaws.

For example, Emma has to decide whether to save a friend, testing her bravery and impulsiveness.

Reactions:

Show how your characters react to these challenges.

Do they rise to the occasion, or do they struggle and fail? Both outcomes can lead to growth.

Emma might fail to save her friend due to her impulsive nature, marking a turning point for her.

Introspection:

Allow these moments of introspection to your characters.

They allow readers to understand the change in them.

Emma could sit near a bonfire and reflect on her father's legacy and how to become a better leader.

4. Cultivate Relationships

People's relationships with others often define their personality. It might be a friendship bond, family attachment, or enmity; all reveal different dimensions of personality and contribute to character development. Consider:

Allies and Friends:

Allies and friends usually have your best interest at heart, but sometimes they could work in opposition to you.

How would they impact your protagonist's decisions and developments over time?

Emma's best friend, Leo, might argue with a lot of her decisions, making her more thoughtful.

Opponents and Antagonists:

An antagonist challenges the characters, putting them in situations where growth comes from unexpected places.

A realistic rival for Emma could be a highly skilled but ruthless explorer who pushes Emma to reconsider her methods.

Love Interests:

Romantic relationships show vulnerability and may drive change.

Falling in love with a local guide might teach Emma the importance of patience and planning.

5. Use Dialogue Effectively

Dialogue is a great way to develop a character. It reveals personality, conveys emotions, and shows growth. Consider:

Voice:

Each character should have a distinct voice corresponding to their background, personality, and state of mind.

Emma might use exuberant, adventurous language while Leo might be cautious and thoughtful.

Subtext:

Sometimes the unspoken part holds more meaning than what is said.

Use subtext to add depth to your dialogue.

For instance, when Emma says, "I don't need help," it could mean she's afraid of showing weakness.

Conflict and Resolution:

Show characters responding to conflict through dialogue and illustrate how interactions escalate.

Emma and Leo can argue about the best way forward, expressing their viewpoints and eventually finding a resolution.

6. Show, Don't Tell

Instead of telling readers about a character's trait, show it through actions, dialogue, and inner thoughts. For instance:

Telling: John was brave.

Showing: John entered the dark alley; his heart was pounding, but his will remained unflinching.

7. Ensure Consistency and Believability

Make sure your characters act within the line of their personalities and motivations. If they do something that feels unnatural, believe there are reasons for the change. This makes the development of the characters organic and reliable. If Emma becomes reserved, note the experiences that lead to the change.

8. Reflect Real Human Experience

Great characters reflect the complexity of real human experience. They have doubts, make mistakes, and aren't always likable. This complexity makes them richer and more engaging. Perhaps Emma makes a selfish decision that puts her team at risk, creating tension and growth.

9. Foils and Contrasts

Foils are characters set against your main character, highlighting their traits and growth. By setting a character with opposite traits next to the protagonist, you highlight their development. Zara's ruthlessness can highlight Emma's growing sense of responsibility and ethics.

10. Be Flexible

Writing anxiety in characters can be a challenge, especially for people who have never experienced a panic attack. I speak about this from experience--you can read my previous post for more information regarding this. Suffice it to say that I had a perception of what anxiety was and what panic attacks would look like--then I experienced one. 

Before I dive into this, I am going to explain a little bit about what anxiety/panic attacks are. Basically, the fight or flight system is triggered at an inappropriate time. The body is flooded with adrenaline as if a bear was attacking. It can make you feel like you’re going to die unless you do X. But X doesn’t exist. There is no threat, so there is no solution. Instead you’re overwhelmed with these hormones that do nothing but make you shake  and steal your breath, with no outlet. 

In fiction, we generally write about panic attacks in relation to characters who are experiencing a trauma or have experience trauma previously (PTSD). In cases of PTSD, there might be a smell, a sight, or a sound that triggers the flight or fight response. This is the body’s way of protecting itself from receiving another trauma. So a veteran might hear a car backfire in the parking lot of Walmart and hit the deck. 

One of the misconceptions that I had regarding anxiety/panic attacks was that they always had a trigger. If the trigger could be avoided, then the anxiety could be possibly resolved. This is not true always true--or the trigger is so subconscious that it does not register to the person experiencing it. Anxiety can wake you from a dead sleep with sweats, heart palpitations, nausea, and a tightness around your neck. 

Another misconception was that panic attacks are obvious. I assumed that if someone experienced a panic attack, the person would immediately know what was taking place. This is not true. In fact, people experiencing panic attacks often end up in the ER thinking they are experiencing a heart attack. 

Now let’s talk about perception of anxiety/panic attacks. 

Thankfully, the culture is starting to talk more about psychological conditions such as anxiety and depression, but there can still be a stigma related to these illnesses. So when you’re writing about anxiety, consider how your character feels about these things. Do they fear the anxiety and allow it to consume them? Do they know what’s causing it? Do they feel like a failure because their anxiety gets in the way of their life? (This one was a big personal feeling of mine. I am a stay-at-home mom and couldn’t take care of my son during the worst of my anxiety crisis. This had a huge impact on my self-perception). Or are they coping/trying to manage their symptoms through meditation, walks, breathing exercises, etc. Having a character go through the stages of acceptance with an anxiety disorder can be a good story arch. 

So what does a panic attack look like? I’m going to describe one of my typical panic attacks. Keep in mind that not all panic attacks are the same for everyone, but this will hopefully be a good starting point for you in your writing: 

Generally, it starts in the back of my mind, a little nagging feeling. Sometimes it’s proceeded by a headache (but mine are hormonally related rather than trauma based, so that might just be me). Then I get a tightness in my chest right below my throat. This stays throughout the panic attack and generally lingers for some time after. I get very restless--especially my hands. I start flexing my fingers, rubbing my arms repeatedly. Then I start clenching my teeth. Generally after this, I start pacing then try self soothing motions (hugging myself, rubbing my arms). Nausea generally sets in at this point. If it’s bad enough, I will throw up. There’s a third element to fight/flight and that is freeze. That’s what I do. I don’t want to go anywhere/do anything. I sit in my chair or on the floor rocking back and forth running my hands through my hair. I sometimes claw at the arm rests or carpet. I want to scream. 

So what’s going on in my head at that time? Well, my higher functions are turned off. More or less it’s a constant scream of ‘make it stop! make it stop!’ or ‘I can’t do this. I’m going to die. This is going to go on forever.’ It alternates between that and the TV show I watched last night. Seriously, sometimes it’s like my thoughts are completely separate from what’s going on in my body. 

Generally, panic attacks last 30 minutes, but not mine. Once again, mine are hormonally related, so that’s where the abnormality occurs. (I have low progesterone.) 

Thankfully, there are things you can do to keep panic attacks from getting that bad. A twenty minute walk kills mine. I no longer sit and rock--but the strange thing is my body rebels against this logic. When I first start walking, my nausea gets worse and I have to go to the bathroom. It’s like a part of my brain is telling me to do the opposite of what will help. It’s obnoxious. Deep breathing exercises work for some people, meditation, CBD, etc. The best thing is to remind yourself what is happening and to tell yourself that it’s just temporary and will go away eventually.

From Zoya’s character arc so far, two things that really stood up to me are how she, as a character, makes a clear distinction between being naïve and stupid, while also showing a distinction between being vulnerable and weak. The lock-up scenes, and the scene where she got rid of the tiger are my biggest evidence here. I personally thought her repeated dialogue to Aditya in today’s episode about how she may look stupid, but is actually not, was a very valid point. Bear with me here, because I know a lot of people seem to think that how could someone who was so easily fooled by someone like Mahi call herself not stupid. But that’s the whole point here. To be fooled by someone you need to trust that person. And Zoya is someone who easily trusts people, because she is pure at heart and thus always looks at the good in people. And as we could see from her reaction to Yash’s affair initially, when Zoya trusts someone, she trusts them blindly with no conditions. But this is not called being stupid; this is called being naïve. What’s the difference? The difference is that if she were stupid, she would’ve agreed with no hesitation when Aditya was coming up with the plan of fake marriage. But she didn’t, because she knew the consequences of what he was about to do, and the risks it held. The only reason she gave in was because, at that time, she was utterly helpless and had no way out. More importantly, if she were stupid, she would’ve never agreed to run away with Aditya when Rajveer was on their tail. It was a calculative step taken by Zoya, and as she confessed today, she didn’t decide to join hands with Aditya because he forced her to; instead, it was a decision she made at the time, because she felt like it was the right thing to do. So no, she may have been naïve at times, but never stupid.

Coming to the point of her being vulnerable but not weak, I fully agreed with Aditya when he said the same. He is right. Zoya is not weak. There have been many instances where we were shown Zoya breakdown. But not once has Zoya lost her faith and will to keep going. And ironically, my strongest piece of evidence for this comes from when she slit her wrist. As she fell to the ground, and heard Aditya’s voice in her head saying he will keep fighting, she suddenly didn’t want to die anymore. You could see her regret her actions in an instant. Despite slowly starting to lose her consciousness, she attempted to get up to unlock the door so Aditya could save her. Then, when she regained consciousness at the hospital, the first thing she said to Aditya was ‘thank you’. Because she didn’t want to die, and was glad that she was alive. It was only moment of weakness she showed. Had she been as weak as everyone assumes, she wouldn’t have felt glad that her attempt at suicide didn’t succeed, and would’ve even attempted again. Not just that, but it also takes courage to leave behind your family and go with the man you love, and had she been weak, she would’ve never been able to take such a step. It takes courage to come to a new, unknown city and try to survive there all on your own, and once again, had she been weak, she would’ve never held on for so long in Mumbai. And lastly, as Aditya reminded her today, had she been weak she would’ve never been able to fend off that tiger the way she did.

But yes, Zoya is vulnerable.She is vulnerable because she easily trusts people, and always believes in doing what’s right. She is vulnerable because she is naïve, and because she hasn’t seen how cruel life could be. This blends so well into AdiYa equation because Aditya understands this, and his personality complements this. This is where the difference between Yash and Aditya lies with regards to how they treat Zoya.

Episode Meltdown: Did Fan Service Kill Fitz’s Darkest (And Best) Arc in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

The Framework Was Brilliant. So Why Did It Flinch?

Hook: This Isn’t About One Episode — It’s About a Missed Turning Point

Today’s Episode Meltdown isn’t about a single episode.

It’s about an arc.

Because sometimes the meltdown isn’t one bad hour of television. Sometimes it’s a narrative choice that had the potential to redefine a character forever… and then blinked.

Let’s talk about the “Agent of Hydra” Framework arc in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Specifically?

Fitz.

And whether the show chose comfort over courage.

The Framework Arc Was Structurally Genius

Season 4 did something bold structurally. Instead of one long 22-episode stretch, it divided the season into clear arcs:

Ghost Rider

LMD

Agent of Hydra / The Framework

And honestly? I loved that format.

It avoided filler. It gave thematic cohesion. It made each arc feel like a contained chapter with a beginning, middle, and end.

And then we entered the Framework — AIDA’s artificial reality where Hydra rules instead of S.H.I.E.L.D., where heroes become villains, and villains become something else entirely.

It was high-concept, emotionally rich, morally twisted.

And it gave us something incredible:

Villain Fitz.

Fitz as “The Doctor” Was His Peak

Let’s be honest.

Iain De Caestecker delivered the performance of his career in this arc.

Fitz as The Doctor wasn’t just evil. He was controlled. Cold. Calculating. Confident. He wasn’t comic-book villain energy — he was terrifying because he made sense.

And here’s the key point:

Everyone else in the Framework chooses to wake up.

Coulson. Daisy. Mack.

They’re confronted with the truth, and at some point, they decide to leave.

Fitz doesn’t.

That detail matters.

When Simmons tries to wake him, he points a gun at her. He resists. He doesn’t choose reality. He is physically forced out when Simmons tackles him through the exit.

He is dragged out.

He does not willingly abandon that identity.

And that is narratively enormous.

The One Character Who Didn’t Choose

Why does this matter so much?

Because it suggests that something in that version of Fitz resonated.

Yes, AIDA altered the world. Yes, she shaped circumstances. But the Framework emotions were real. We see that repeatedly:

Mack’s grief over his daughter is real. Daisy’s trauma is real. Coulson’s moral conflict is real.

So why is Fitz’s connection to Ophelia/AIDA treated as entirely artificial?

Why is his villain identity dismissed as pure programming?

If the Framework amplified suppressed truths in everyone else, why wouldn’t it do the same for him?

There was something there. Something darker. Something self-contained and autonomous.

And the show almost explored it.

The Missed Opportunity: Let Him Stay Changed

For a moment — especially when Fitz is captured alongside AIDA — it genuinely felt like the show might do something radical.

It felt like he might not come back the same.

It even felt possible that he could choose her.

And narratively? That would have made sense.

It would have been far more organic than Ward’s half-redemption arcs. Imagine the inversion: Ward seeking redemption while Fitz embraces darkness.

That’s risk. That’s evolution.

Instead?

The story course-corrected.

Hard.

FitzSimmons: Growth… Then Reversal

Let’s talk about the elephant in the fandom.

Fitz and Simmons.

In early seasons, they worked. They were inseparable. The shared brain. The college-best-friends-to-lovers slow burn. It was sweet. Earned. Emotional.

But here’s the issue.

As the seasons progressed, both characters grew independently.

Simmons’ arc — especially post-monolith — was extraordinary. She developed strength, autonomy, emotional resilience. Her dynamic with Trip had natural progression. It wasn’t forced; it grew from her individual journey.

Fitz, too, evolved. His trauma. His instability. His brilliance. And then The Doctor.

Both characters were branching.

And then those branches were cut so they could be tied back together.

This Isn’t Fan Service — It’s the Fear of Letting Go

Fan service is when writers change direction to please the audience.

This felt like something slightly different — but just as limiting.

It felt like the writers were unwilling to let go of the original blueprint.

Fitz and Simmons were conceived as a unit.

So no matter how much they individually evolved, they had to end up back there.

Even if it meant ignoring the narrative implications of:

Fitz not choosing to leave the Framework

His genuine emotional bond with AIDA

The psychological fracture of being forced back into reality

You don’t write a character being dragged out of a false world against his will… and then pretend it has no lingering consequence.

That’s not a small detail.

That’s foundational.

The Deke Problem (Or: Destiny Over Development)

And then we get to Deke.

When he was introduced, I genuinely thought he might become Daisy’s love interest. It would have been unexpected, messy, interesting.

Instead, he becomes the grandson of Fitz and Simmons.

And suddenly, everything feels retroactively predestined.

Not organic.

Predestined.

As if the universe itself had to validate that FitzSimmons were always meant to be.

At that point, it stopped feeling like character growth.

It felt like narrative enforcement.

When Writers Don’t Follow the Characters

Here’s the thing.

As a writer, you can start with a plan.

But sometimes your characters evolve beyond it. They surprise you. They deepen. They branch out in ways that are richer than what you originally intended.

And when that happens, you have two choices:

Follow the growth.

Or force them back onto the outline.

The Framework arc showed us what Fitz could be when untethered from Simmons.

And it was fascinating.

Instead of leaning into that evolution, the show pulled him back to origin.

Not because it was the most interesting choice.

But because it was the safest.

Television Used to Be Braver

There was a time when shows made choices that angered fans — but strengthened storytelling.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer broke Buffy and Angel.

Charmed killed Prue.

Those decisions were explosive at the time.

But they served the larger arc.

Now?

There’s a visible hesitation. A fear of alienating fandoms. A fear of disrupting popular ships.

And when storytelling becomes afraid of its audience, it starts losing its edge.

Final Thought: The Framework Was the Best Arc — And Its Biggest Miss

The Agent of Hydra arc is, in my opinion, the strongest stretch of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It was bold. Conceptually daring. Emotionally complex.

And yet.

The decision to reset Fitz — to minimize the significance of him not choosing to leave — feels like a massive missed opportunity.

He wasn’t awakened.

He was pulled out.

And that difference should have changed everything.

You know it’s a good show when you don’t need to constantly see the two main leads being shown together to actually enjoy an episode! I absolutely loved all the family scenes we got these two episodes, and I am definitely here for the Harshvardhan- Wasim team up! I am all strapped up to see these rich/influential fathers go to extreme lengths to protect their children! 

The way Adi said “Pa” had me clutching my heart, because so many emotions dripped from his voice when he said that! HC’s acting in that scene was definitely praise worthy! His voice modulation was the perfect mix of vulnerability and pleading, when he asked his father to save not just him but Zoya as well. The Aditya that stood next to Harshvardhan today was not the son who had been calling his father by his name for the past god-knows how many years, because he cheated on his wife and family. The Aditya that stood before him today was his son – his Cheeku– whom he had lost to circumstances long ago. 

I think it was very significant how both Harsh and Anjana only used the nickname ‘Cheeku’ to address Aditya when they finally reconnected with him as parent and son, because before that, they either called him Aditya or Adi. This  really highlighted the difference between Aditya before and after his father’s scandal unfolded, and despite not knowing much about how Aditya was as a child, these simple instances help us, as an audience, to create a certain image of how he must have been as a child. Yes, he still acts like a child sometimes, showing us how playful and happy he must have been, but if you look at it from a more psychoanalytical perspective, you can see that his childhood was ruined because of Harshvardhan’s scandal. And when you look at his character with this information in mind, his stubbornness to not let the inner child in him die down, can easily be seen as his way of holding onto the broken pieces of his childhood. That hurt, lost and confused 16-year-old Aditya who was forced to see a bitter side of life, still resides in this grown Aditya. And he still holds a grudge against his parents for that pain and hurt he went through. He may have moved on from that past, but he hasn’t let go of that past, giving us our typical man-child Aditya Hooda. 

This also allows Pooja to fit seamlessly into his life. She was his best friend, and the one person who supported him throughout it all. It could’ve been this that brought them together in the first place, and because of this, she was an unknowing and subconscious reminder to Adi of how his father had failed him. Which is why Pooja could never be the bridge that connected Adi back to his family. Zoya, on the other hand, held no connection to Aditya’s past, and thus holds a possibility at being the bridge that could help that 16-year-old Aditya find solace, and finally be free of his haunting past, allowing Zoya to fit seamlessly into the character arc of Aditya. It was further highlighted when Arjun’s thoughts about how Zoya had reconciled the father and son were shown, because in order for Aditya to truly show progress and development as a character, it’s extremely important for him be free of his past. This, I feel, complements the crux of the show, which is about how Zoya and Aditya re-discover themselves with the help of each other, after an unfortunate event brings them together. 

To Aditya, Zoya was a puzzle piece that came along despite the whole picture being completed. But after Pooja’s death, along with the news of her affair, when Adi’s “supposedly” complete puzzle was in shattered pieces, it was Zoya’s puzzle piece that helped him gain sight of how he could build a new puzzle with what he has left. She had given him reasons to move on, again and again, since the unfortunate incident. And in the future, hopefully, she will help him realize that the perfect puzzle of his past that he grieves over now was actually an imperfect, ill-fitting illusion that was bound to break at some point.

A great plot may attract readers, but unforgettable characters make them stay.

For indie fiction writers, character development is where the magic happens—flaws, motivations, emotional depth, and transformation all shape how readers connect with your story. Characters should feel human, not perfect. Their struggles, choices, and growth create the emotional pull that keeps pages turning. As one writing principle notes, strong characters need “complexity and depth” and clear intent to feel believable.
