Meet Makoto Edamura. A street scam artist and by far the worst treated MC I ever seen.
The dude is non-stop manipulated, gaslighted, used, and taken advantage of by his so-called "found family."
Already in the first episode, he gets manipulated into working for them and made to believe he killed 2 people.
When he decides to turn his life around after that and become a better person, he willingly goes to prison for 2 years, learning new jobs to be a part of society again. The moment he gets out, it turns out that everything was staged, and the stuff he learned through those two years was purely so he could help them with another haist to which he didn't agreed but was forced to.
He wasted 2 years believing he can get better just for everything to be staged.
Any time he refuses to help them, they gaslight him to make him cooperate. They made him get human trafficked and intentionally meet a trafficked child, so he feels guilty and helps them. Any time he wants to lead a legal life, they mess his life enough so he can't.
His father, who was the reason for him to become a scammer, turned out to be a part of the organisation's and is expected to be forgiven just because even through he abandoned his child and deadly sick wife and completely destroyed their reputation.
He gets to be a villain once (it's the best thing ever), but they backtrack, making it just a show that his "oh so brilliant friends" obviously seen through right away.
His treatment is so bad that the main gay ship of the series between him and another character that is strongly alluded isn't acknowledged purely because of how toxic it would be.

Can I offer more Kurosawa propaganda? He falls for a man he has no hope of ever winning, and rather than succumb to bitterness he begins quietly cheering him on from the sidelines. It's quiet not as a reflection of his commitment, but because the one he loves is a quiet man who would not enjoy limelight.
By a strange twist of fate his love discovers his feelings, and at every point he lets Adachi lead the pacing and set the boundaries that let Adachi feel safe enough to fall in love. He offers his love, but even above that he offers Adachi friendship and respect. He made himself so trustworthy and consistent that a shy man with a terrifying secret absolutely blooms in the warmth of his regard. If you want a green flag, Kurosawa is the blueprint.
