It has been a few days since that incident in one of the dark the dark alleys of Manhattan. A few days since he met that woman. She wasn’t too young but she wasn’t too old either and she was beautiful. The woman, for some reason kept popping in his mind every now and then and he only met her once. One time in that alley and he never saw her again. Until today.
He didn’t go in search for her, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t hope to run into her again. But he didn’t know anything about her. So, the best he could do was again go to that alley and al its neighboring places and that went for few days. He kept repeating his visits to those places, not knowing what he’ll do or say if he did run into he again. Like that, he scaled the whole of Manhattan and he still didn’t see her again.
He could always just visit the cops that came after he saved her and just ask them about her but that might only make his team mates see him as some type of gigolo and the last thing he needs is another satirical remark from Tony Stark.
After scaling through literally almost every street, every nook and corner of Manhattan, Steve decided that he was done for the day and decided to leave after heaving a sigh. He was venturing back to his motorcycle when he spotted a bakery nearby and decided to treat himself out of his misery, or somewhat out of his misery.
At a secluded corner with pedestrians popping into the bakery every now and then, laid ‘Sugar Shack.’ Steve walked towards the bakery and when he entered the shop, he was hit with the fresh aroma of baked breads, molten chocolates and just a tinge of exotic spices. Colorful baked beauties were set in the display.
The bakery had a rustic look with dark brown wooden flooring, the seats were random and the chairs were mismatched yet the whole bakery looked welcoming. Pendant lights arrayed at the counter and the tables adding to the classic look. But that’s not what got his immediate attention. It was the woman behind the counter that got his attention. The same one that he saved all those nights ago. Standing behind the counter in a black pencil skirt that was an inch or two above her knees and a light pink shirt along with a black apron, she looked beautiful while smiling, giving a take away cup to a customer who took it and left without giving another glance. He couldn’t believe that after days of hoping to bump into you and scaling the whole of Manhattan, she was right there, right under his nose, all this while.
After recovering from his initial shock, a sweet one at that, he walked towards the counter, approaching you and you greeted him with a smile. Steve smiled back at her. Recognition flashed in her eyes when he approached her.
“Hello. What can I get you, Captain Rogers?” she asked him.
Steve smiled at her and replied “Please. It’s Steve. And I – uh,… I’ll have a black coffee and uh… two chocolate chip cookies.”
With a sweet smile, she took his order and after paying for it along with a heavy tip, he took a seat in a corner by the window from where she could be visible. He could literally watch her every movement from there. A phone call startled him from staring her while she was busy making his order ready. It was just Bucky, wondering where he was and what he was doing, asking if he’s still up for the guys’ night that Steve has been postponing ever since he saved her.
Rolling his eyes, Steve told him “I’ll be there. Just don’t do anything stupid. And that applies to Sam and Tony too. God, only Bruce is the one with a decently functioning brain among you guys.”
With a scoff, Bucky replied “How can we? You’ve taken all the stupid with ya. Don’t be late, or you won’t have any pizza left.”
Steve scoffed and Bucky hung up. Just then, she walked towards him with a tray in her hand. She smiled at him sweetly and he returned it while she set down a cup of coffee, a small white plate with two chocolate chip cookies. But what surprised him was another small plate with a donut with red, white and blue sprinkles that she set in front of him. Frowning, Steve looked at her.
“Umm….” He looked at the name tag on her uniform, right above her chest and then looked back at her face.
“I didn’t order that, Y/N” he told her.
She looked at him in amusement and Steve’s mind immediately put images into his head. Like the one where he imagined her in his kitchen, after cooking something and serving it to him and looking at him with the similar expression she wore now.
“You didn’t. That is a form of thank you, for saving me the other day, Captain Rogers” she told him.
“Steve” Steve corrected her.
Y/N smiled and said “Steve.”
“But you have thanked me already, that day” he told her.
“Sometimes, verbal pleasantries are not enough when someone helps you. You have to do more than just verbally thanking them. And this is my way of thanking you…” she told him.
“…Steve” she said, saying his name for the first time.
This time, Steve looked at her in amusement and grinned.
“If that’s the case, I’ll save you every chance I get, whenever you need to be saved, doll” he said and Y/N looked down at her feet, her cheeks coloring into a red shade and she gave him a shy smile.
