The journey wasn't easy and he is in a foul mood when they arrive at Lallybroch.
“Laird Mackenzie.” Ian bows low as he receives them.
“Laird Murray.”
They are welcomed with spirits in the great room. After their restorative effects, they ask for more information about the missing Frasers.
“I knew how long such a journey should take, even according for a newly married couple.”
The brothers exchange a look and nod for him to continue.
“Eh, so when they were late arriving, I thought it best to take some men and go check. Knowing the most logical route, I, well we, set off. A day's ride away, we discovered…”
He swallows hard and Jenny lays her hand over his.
“Go on.” Dougal says.
“The wagon was turned over. No mounts to be found. The trunks had been gone through. Their clothing was scattered along the road. One of my men was tasked with picking it up. The rest, along with myself, rode in all directions searching for them.”
“How did you know it was their wagon?” Column was seeking any relief from the growing distress.
Ian hands him the letter of introduction he himself had written for Jamie.
The last of his hope flees.
“No blood though, you didn't mention finding blood or any other sign of violence?”
‘Outside the missing mounts and disturbed trunks?” His brother answers.
“I need to see what was left.” He stands, a small groan escaping as his legs are forced to bear his weight after the long journey.
“Of course,” he led him upstairs, “We placed it in a guest room.”
Column and Dougal, who had followed them, immediately started to go through it. Ian leaves them to the task.
It is Column that finds the hidden letter. It is addressed to him and starts out, “Forgive me my Laird. She is with child. It is safer to deliver in my time.”
He lets out a strong string of Ghaillic curses.
