Fishing in Chaos

Short Chaos/Zag drabble I wrote last night based on this line:

When Zagreus entered Chaos' realm, they were towering above the platform from amidst the glittering, dark waters, as though emerging from the depths; they turned to face him as soon as he touched down.

"Ah, here is my favorite among those immortals dwelling underneath the Earth. How may I change your life today, O Son of Hades?"

Zagreus blinked at the words, eyes widening a fraction; he pointed at himself, lips pulling in a smile.

"I'm your favorite?"

Chaos hummed, "As you are well aware,I seldom interact with anyone else. Who else would it be?"

"Nyx?" Zagreus said, "I mean, she's your daughter. I would have expected her to be your favorite immortal."

Chaos paused to think of this, "That is not an incorrect assessment. Of all my offspring she is the one I hold dearest to my heart. Thus she is also a favorite of mine, in a sense."

They lowered their palm in front of him and Zagreus hoisted himself up, allowing Chaos to bring him closer to be at eye level.

"However, you have proved to be not only a great source of amusement and wonder throughout your quest, but pleasant company as well. You intrigue me the most, son of Hades, and every time you leave my realm I await for the moment you will visit again, for your presence is sorely missed," they brought their other hand closer and tipped Zagreus' chin with just a finger, "It is under these terms that I call you my favorite. Do you understand, now?"

Heat traveled up Zagreus' neck and cheeks. Faced with Chaos' intense gaze and their blunt and sincere words made his skin tingle and his heart beat faster. His face broke out onto a wide grin.

"Master Chaos I…I am deeply honored. And I want to assure you that the feeling is completely mutual!" he took the finger under his chin between his palms. Before he could think much about it, he pressed a kiss to the knuckle, "That is, you're also my favorite."

"You need not flatter me back. I am aware there are many who seek favor of your heart, and that you in turn favor them."

"It's not just flattery. While it's always a pleasure to receive your boon, I enjoy visiting you most of all; you have always given me a choice and I have always accepted it. Truly, it's a shame we cannot see each other unless I'm out ransacking my father's realm! Though," he rubbed his thumbs over Chaos' finger, "Now that the Sigil at home is fixed…perhaps…? I've never used it myself before, but maybe Nyx can teach me. If, of course," he hurried to add, "I wouldn't be imposing on you if I dropped to visit that way."

The first hints of a smile crossed Chaos' features. It was always endearing whenever Zagreus grew eager, yet unexpectedly bashful.

Chaos bent their head and pressed their lips to the top of his head.
