'   shadow,  you  should  know  better  than  anyone  that  it’s  not  fair  to  make  sweeping  generalizations  like  that.  ’   tone  is  matter-of-fact  as  she  finishes  sweeping  up  the  last  of  the  broken  porcelain  shards  off  the  floor  and  into  the  bin.  a  sigh—gaze  snaps  to  meet  his,  hand  resting  on  hip  as  shoulders  shrug.   ‘  it’s  not  fair  to  tails.  ’

and  that’s  exactly  the  problem.  kim’s  not  one  to  ignore  the  gravity  of  a  statement  like  that  or  brush  over  it  like  it’s  nothing—but  after  hearing  about  shadow’s  untimely  death  in  a  move  of  ultimate  self-sacrifice  over,  and  over,  and  over  again,  it  started  to  lose  its  impact.  which  isn’t  to  say  that  she  isn’t  grateful—because  she  is—but  that’s  not  at  all  the  energy  she’s  going  for  right  now.  brows  knit  together,  mouth  tugging  into  a  frown.   ‘  not  to  sound  insensitive  here,  but.....  I’ve  also  come  up  with  hundreds  of  plans  in  my  life,  and  none  of  them  got  me  killed.  let’s  try  and  think  of  something  that  doesn’t  involve  a  body  count,  please.  ’

'  not  to  sound  totally  cliché,  ’   because  when  you  get  right  down  to  it,  a  lot  of  her  world-saving  exploits  lean  heavy  into  genre  clichés—but  that’s  not  the  point.   ‘  I  don’t  have  the  option  to  be  scared.  besides,  you  deal  with  one  half-baked  take-over-the-world  scheme  and  the  rest  don’t  seem  so  bad  after  that.  if  it’s  drakken,  it’s  probably  gonna  be  robots  or  mind  control.  if  it’s  dementor,  it’s  gonna  be  some  convoluted  extortion  or  kidnapping  scheme.  if  it’s  the  seniors,  it’s  gonna  be  something  out  of  a  tacky  spy  movie  from  the  ‘70s—it’s  really  no  big.  ’
