Major life change taking place over the next (hopefully) twelve months. Phase 1 has started - January 30, 2017
UK Network Scout Contingent, 15th World Scout Moot - Iceland, 2017.
Netherlands Contingent, World Scout Moot 2017.
So I had a conversation with a Rover also going to World Moot last week about packing, and what the options are that people are considering for the gear that they want.
So a bag that has straps you can carry/wear it with, as opposed to a suitcase with only wheels, is probably a good starting point. Irish Scouts for their official contingent bags to some events seem to use North Face duffels like this, but you can get similar bags for a better price (or even that bag on eBay for half the price, if that’s your thing).
I don’t want to turn this post into a gear post of what you need for Iceland, but if you’re having issues on thinking about what gear you need, start with the basics:
- You’re gonna need good footwear anyway, so don’t forget that. You always need good footwear. - Pack a strong tent that is suitable for Icelandic conditions (that cheap $15 tent form K-mat ain’t gonna cut it for this Moot. I took one look at mine and this was my thought. - Layers. Consider packing layers to use, instead of 1-2 ‘warm’ pieces of clothes. I’ve been told many stories of Canada Moot of certain Rovers from an unnamed state in Australia who wore singlets and footy-shorts and then complained about the cold. Don’t do this. - Label everything (except maybe underwear? I dunno, everyone has different opinions here). Your bag? Make it REALLY identifiable - ribbons, colour, a scarf? Just make it stand out so you can find it easily. - Packing cells/zip-lock bags. You can laugh, but they (a) make it easier to find certain stuff when you need to, (b) compress clothes so you can use your space better and (c) can be repurposed for other uses while you’re onsite.
Starting to get beyond basics - but what packing tips do you suggest for Iceland Moot?
