Ever went on her first hike today, about four miles by my phone, and she worked off leash for most of it and did great. Hiking through East Texas reminds me of how much I will miss it when I leave, how much I am already grieving having to leave it as I watch it get whittled down into neighborhoods and strip malls. I can put good faith that the forest I grew up in will remain but the woods I played in as a kid are already on borrowed time. I took a water break today right next to where I took on of my favorite photos of Echo on my favorite day with him. Years ago, I hiked that same stretch with a woman who died last fall and had more people at her funeral than I ever thought possible for someone who wasn’t a minor celebrity. The big thicket has always been haunted, but now it’s my ghosts too.
